NekoHomey Purely Joyful Movie!
Limerculer A waste of 90 minutes of my life
Janae Milner Easily the biggest piece of Right wing non sense propaganda I ever saw.
Zandra The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
p.newhouse@talk21.com First let me be clear: my copy has the English soundtrack on it. Based on the books by Jon Svensson, this is an enthralling tale of two Icelandic boys and their mother, whose husband has abandoned them to sail around the world in the 1850's.Nonni and Manni, and their mother, Sigrid Jonsdottir have lived without the boys' father, Sven, for eight years when Harald, his best friend, arrives with news of his death. This is the story of how Sigrid and her boys come to terms with the knowledge that they will never see Sven again. The news of Sven's death brings a new chapter in their lives, including coping with Sigrid's unsuitable (slimey) suitor, Magnus Hansson, and a fight for the boys to prove that Harald is innocent of murder. They live in a small village in the 1860's, where it is easy to pin a murder on a stranger, but not so easy to prove the stranger innocent afterwards. It is easy to align yourself with Nonni and Manni, as Gadar Thor Cortes and Einar orn Einarsson respectively are completely natural in the roles of the two sons. Lisa Harrow (All Creatures Great and Small) is wonderful as ever. Luc Merenda lends Harald very human depths, and Stuart Wilson, as Magnus Hansson, is as refined as Dracula. This is a breathtakingly beautiful adventure drama, and the stark and stunning Icelandic countryside makes it even more so.This is a European Co-production, with stars from several countries. Although the actors playing Nonni, Manni, Sigrid, Harald, and Magnus seem to be acting in English, many of the other actors seem to be dubbed. This film was probably dubbed into several languages. The lip-synching of some of the parts in the English Version was a little inaccurate, but because the main actors seemed to be speaking English, this did not prove more than a slight distraction. Lisa Harrow and Stuart Wilson are English, and Einar orn Einarsson later went to theatre school in England.
ceridwen_04 I'm Italian, I've watched this movie when I was little with my mum and I've seen it every year since then, every winter. It became a tradition of sort in my family. It's a great story, especially if you like northern landscape and historical settings. I bought the DVD from Iceland and it came in English, German,Icelandic. I'm looking for subtitles though, to make it possible for my mum to watch it again (she broke the VHS since she watched it so many times!) Anyway, if you have them, any language is fine, I'll translate it, please contact me at ceridwen_04(at)yahoo.it It's a very nice English dubbing (actually, it seems like it was recorded in English originally by the movements of their lips). But there are bits of it when they speak too quickly, or they are talking about Icelandic names and places, it would be nice to have a written subtitle as a base.
Gunnar_Runar_Ingibjargarson 1869: Nonni and Manni live near a small village on the coast of Iceland with their mother (Sigrid) and grandmother. Their father boarded a ship headed overseas before 8-year-old Manni was born, and the family has been awaiting his return. One day a stranger named Harald comes ashore with the sad news that Nonni and Manni's father has died. The family begins the mourning process, and Harald helps out on their farm in return for board. The boys form a bond with him, and begin to look up to him as a father figure. A local businessman, who is quite smitten with Sigrid, becomes increasingly irate about the situation.A rich farmer in the village is murdered. Harald is blamed for the incident, and decides to flee into the mountains. Nonni and Manni are determined to help keep him safe and prove his innocence. With the help of a friend, they locate a secure hiding place. As might be expected from any 12-year-old, Nonni devises several trips to the hideout with his little brother. They put themselves into peril by doing so, and the story progresses with several life-threatening close calls.
