Onlinewsma Absolutely Brilliant!
Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
RaspberryLucozade Like with 'Duty Free' and 'Brush Strokes', I only got into this show about ten years ago when it was shown on the Paramount Comedy channel. It was a pleasingly gentle show which marked a return to television for comedy veteran Anton Rodgers, who at this time was also starring in another sitcom for ITV - 'French Fields' ( a sequel to the earlier 'Fresh Fields' ). Anton paired up with the gorgeous Eve Matheson to play a couple of whom between them is a massive age gap. If to you it all sounds like fluff, then it is, but then that was what its charm was.Alec Callender is a Scottish solicitor and 'Perry Mason' fan who has been widowed for some time and wishes for some excitement in his life. All this changes when he meets and falls in love with beautiful P.E teacher Zoe Angell whilst handling her divorce. Due to the large age-gap between Alec and Zoe ( him being 53 to her 26 ), the latter's family, particularly Zoe's brassy mother Dot, do not particularly approve of the relationship. All this aside, the relationship seems to be built on solid ground.Alec has two children, Jamie and Simone, him being outgoing and brash and her being the stuck-up wife of a vicar, who dislikes Zoe. The only one who seems to be at ease with the relationship is Zoe's sister Debbie.Alec's senior secretary is Vera, who without anyone's knowledge is the writer of a steamy novel. She shares and office with junior secretary Hilary ( the lovely Rebecca Lacey ) whose seems to use her brain as a cushion. She was later replaced by Ashley Jensen as Rosie.Paul A. Mendelson specialised in devising average unexceptional sitcoms such as 'My Hero', 'So Haunt Me' and this. It was popular enough to last for a respectable six season run. Anton Rodgers was brilliant as Alec and brought the character to life with his wonderfully convincing Scottish accent. Eve Matheson portrayed Zoe in the first two seasons but was replaced for the remainder of the run by Lesley Dunlop but it was not quite the same. Good actress though Lesley is and as much as she did her best, Matheson was superior.Christine Cotteril also was fantastic as Zoe's open minded sister, as were Carolyn Pickles and Paul Venables as Alec's children. 'Love Thy Neighbour' star Kate Williams was funny in those episodes she did as Zoe's mum. Frances White though was too boring to be funny as Vera. All of 'May To December' is now on DVD and makes for enjoyable viewing for us people who love to just stay in and watch the telly with a cup of hot chocolate.
barebear2 I am a "May to December" husband. My wife is 28 years younger than I am. We have had 19 happy years together this Feb 14th. I worked in Pinner Middlesex England as a policeman for 9 years and the show was filmed in the village, not on a studio lot. I think this was one of the best shows that the UK ever sent over to the USA. The story is very true to life, (I went through it with my son just like he does with his daughter.) So far only the first 2 seasons have made it to DVD and I check regularly to see if they have added more seasons.unfortunately they have only put it on DVD in PAL Zone 2. I had to buy a special DVD player so I could watch the ones they have put out. The local PBS station is not running again.
davjazzer This is a very delightful series. After going thru the series twice, I prefer Eve Matheson's portrayal of Zoe over Leslie Dunlop. Leslie was very lovely and a fine actress, but I thought her character was a little too snippy and combative with Alec.Perhaps the writers felt that was necessary as the couple married and had a child. Eve's portrayal was lighter and sweeter and she and Alec always had some nice laughs. Both ladies were very attractive and played their part well. The other supports were excellent. The only character I couldn't take was Rosie, the sectary in the last season. Her accent and acting were too over the top.Anton Rogers was excellent.A wonderful show.Hope it goes to DVD shoo
timmauk I heard that Anton Rodgers(from the classic "Fresh Fields") was in this show and tuned in. He plays a solicitor who meets and falls for a younger woman. His daughter and friends freak over the match. The variest shows tell how they continue to date, avoid pitfalls, and try to cope with his snobby daughter and friends. All this was handled with realism and taste. You may not agree with a May-December romance, but you really feel for these two and understand what people go through in this situation, plus the characters on this show are FUNNY! So if you see it on your PBS channel, tune in and enjoy.
