Synopsis

Deep in the Alaskan wilderness lives a newly discovered family who was born and raised wild. Billy Brown, his wife Ami and their seven grown children – 5 boys and 2 girls – are so far removed from civilization that they often go six to nine months of the year without seeing an outsider. They’ve developed their own accent and dialect, refer to themselves as a "wolf pack," and at night, all nine sleep together in a one-room cabin. Simply put, they are unlike any other family in America. Recently, according to the Browns, the cabin where they lived for years was seized and burned to the ground for being in the wrong location on public land.

O2D This is the most convincing fake reality show that I have seen so far. If you get caught up in the scripted drama you could easily miss all the red flags that prove this show is completely fake. You probably don't think about the ten man camera crew stomping through the woods, following the guy who is crawling on his belly to sneak up on a deer. You probably never question why they never look dirty. Or how they always have everything they need. The people who write this show make the writers of shows like Pawn Stars look retarded. The best thing about this show is that these people aren't even from Alaska. If you watch the show, you know the dad and one of the sons were in some legal trouble but they never mentioned what it was. Well what happened is that they applied for some free money that is available to Alaska natives and that's a serious crime when you just moved there recently to make a TV show. I really love that they have a twenty one year old daughter and a thirteen year old daughter that are the same size and look exactly the same. That's my idea of comedy. If you must watch fake reality, watch this show.
tvaliere At the start of the in 2014 I found it interesting because they said they only had 5k to their name. Once I read a little about The Brown's I find them a fraud. I cannot believe discovery still has their shows on. What a bunch of fakes. They act like they are so poor but each episode they have more stuff. Boats, ropes, chainsaws, nails, wood, guns and everything else they have costs. Most of the episodes show what a bunch of clowns they really are. Noah proclaims he is a scientist, Bam the strong quiet logical one, Matt the oldest and dumbest, Bear the tree climbing monkey, Gabe the muscle man that never wears a jacket in 30 degree temps, and the rest run around like the three stooges giving the real Alaskans and bad name. I guess anyone would be able to make it if they gave you $50,000 an episode. I am totally outraged and will never watch it again after learning about them. I want discovery to do a show on my life. at least it would be real.
crissyvelazquez I love the Browns. I don't care how much is or is not scripted. I watch it because they are an interesting family. I love the uniqueness of each of the kids, their skills in the bush and the love they have for each other. I don't personally know anyone who can captain a huge boat, chop down a tree and make it fall exactly where they want it to, gut a deer and turn it into a backpack and carry it, turn berries into lip gloss, bake a cake on an open fire, fashion furniture from a freshly cut tree, Catch fish with their bare hands or turn a deer antler into a hair brush. How "real" the show is has no bearing on how "real" these people are. They are incredibly resourceful and interesting. I think Billy is a very smart man. He is quick witted and savvy. All the kids seem to genuinely love and respect their parents. So many people are wrapped up in ridiculous celebrities like the Kardashians and what they are doing. I"m pretty confident none of the Brown boys will be putting out a sex tape or selling their wedding photos to the highest bidder. You could drop me into the forest with any one of them and I would feel completely safe. Kudos to the Browns for putting themselves out there without ridiculous pretenses and just being themselves.
emily_contact This is an awesome show! I really love it, and it reminds me so much of how I grew up. We also grew up off the grid. Overall, this show is not only about Alaska, but about a family. It's about a family that chose an unusual life style, and had a series of unfortunate events that led to their patriarch/matriarch making some unusual but strong decisions that bore consequences. Some may be considered bad by modern mainstream standards. My first impressions during Season 1 was that it was more about a very poor family that happened to live in Alaska. But slowly, they achieved their life's goal as a family. To me, this is what makes the show so relatable. It may not be relatable for 'regular' folk. But for those who believe in strong families who work as a team, it's definitely a good testimony despite multiple social setbacks. If you look deep inside, it will teach you more about your own misconceptions about life, family, values and people than anything else. This is not so much about an 'Alaskan family' or a life in 'Alaska'; but about a normal family that chose to live in Alaska and no longer answer the call of mainstream society. Their kids are the byproduct of that decision. And to me, speaking from my own experience, that product seems to be very genuine.I relate very well to this show because it reveals a very overlooked type of family. One that finds it hard to be understood in the modern world. All of the people discrediting this show have missed the entire point. They think living off the grid is just living in a bush. It's way more than that. Living in the bush doesn't mean you've never heard of anything or experienced anything from modern society. It means that you've experienced pockets of it. Those form your opinions and your culture. I struggled with people discrediting my life and experiences. They just can't understand why I would know about somethings and not others. Or why I would be one way, and not another. In reality we are all unique. But there just isn't a lot of cultural overlap with the majority and myself. People, for some reason find that frightening, or try to find ways to discredit it as if it threatens them. In real life, people choose what part of the world they wanna bring into their homes, and what parts they don't. That brings more credit to their story than doubt. As a disclaimer, I've never lived in Alaska (though my father did). So I don't know how real or fake it is. However, this show has a lot of haters, and I can't help but notice that a lot of what they point out are actually normal things from my childhood. So I have a tendency to think that the Brown's are just 'different'. Not a lot of people understand their quirks. When you dig deeper to get to what people have a problem with, most of it actually perfectly explainable for people like me. It's just unusual that people get shows, and the fact that they were living in Alaska (which even living in a city there is so off the grid by normal standards) meant that they didn't struggle with child welfare despite their obvious economic setbacks. But most of all, if anything gives credit to the show: It's the kids accents and behavior. You can't make that up as well as you may think. The kids are obviously siblings, the Browns are obviously a family. I know from personal experience that you only get accents like those, and a diversity of accents like that from living away from people.
