Senteur As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.

arthur_tafero Yellow Sky is a solid Western. It has a good cast, great production values, and memorable music. The director, Wellman, was better known for the horror genre; and in a way, this film suited him, because there was a bit of horror in it.We meet a hardened bunch of bankrobbers trying to make their getaway across some terrible desert. If they survive that, they have to worry about Apaches. But the real thing they have to worry about is greed. Memories of The Treasure of Sierra Madre could not help but creep in during the film; another tale of the lust for gold.The real moral problem of the film is that we are asked to believe that a young woman, who is sexually assaulted, and a grandfather who is shot, and robbed of half of his life savings are supposed to be grateful to the leader of the band that that attempts these deeds. The film is a lot of fun to watch, but if you actually think about what is transpiring, you have to ask yourself, is the moral premise of the film acceptable? It wasn't for me; and I am not exactly a holy roller. But to each his own. Enjoy the great filmmaking.

Prismark10 It is very easy to label an old film featuring well known, even great actors and made by an able director as a classic when it is far from it and Yellow River is it.The film is routine, confused and contradictory. Maybe if it was made in the 1960s during the era of the counterculture it would had made more sense.The film features a gang of bank robbers led by Gregory Peck who ride into a small town that has only Anne Baxter and her grandfather who have found and hid gold and are forced to share it with the gang but the gang soon turn on each other and Peck wants to do the decent thing with the two people whose lives they have entered. Its clear early on he is attracted to Baxter and sparks might fly.Of course the gang of bad men in a town with one beautiful cowgirl gives you an uneasy feeling especially as one of them has loathsome desires for her and is willing to force himself on Baxter. The others are cyphers but its Richard Widmark who is the only one to rival Peck who stands out as the one who wants the gold all for himself if it came to it and not happy that Peck wants to make sure that Baxter and her grandfather get their share of the gold.How some of the gang switch sides is unconvincing, even Peck's motives are unclear although it might be more to the fact that he is Gregory Peck so he cannot be a complete rotter.The film is a diversion, nice to see actors such as Widmark and Harry Morgan is early roles but it is below par and wrestling with the Hays Code did it no favours.

The story as it appeared on the silver screen tells of a gang of bank robbers led by none other than Gregory Peck, who ride into a small town, Rob the local bank and escape with a Posse in pursuit. Unfortunately, they also ride onto the Salt Flats without a sufficient supply of water and nearly die of thirst. Instead they discover a Ghost Town with two people still living there. An old Prospecter and his granddaughter. For many fans, the selection of Gregory Peck as James 'Stretch' Dawson the leader of the bad men, was a miscasting. In addition, other notables that usually wear white hats, such as John Russell (Lawman) and Harry Morgan (MASH) played bad guys. Still they did their best to fill the scripted parts and put together an unlikely and unusual film. The only actor who did a good job with his role was Richard Widmark who played 'Dude.' The female lead was played by Anne Baxter. The story is slow to assemble and the 'gang' is ill formed with dual leaders. Indeed, with the pretty girl becoming a secondary goal and wild marauding Apaches never becoming a definite threat, the movie makes for a poor Western. Still it was interesting to watch top stars making the best of it. ****

standalone-magazine Greed...is the first word that comes to mind when ever, I think about this film. It's a film that makes you think about (right and wrong) as the storyline continues to unfold. Stretch played by (Gregory Peck) and his gang stumble into a town that seems to be deserted. But as they soon learn, there is still a couple of people who still live there. A very lovely girl named Mike played by (Anne Baxter) and her grandfather (James Barton) still live in this ghost town. But why?....Is the question that haunts Stretch and his band of me. As the film unfolds, the truth is revealed about 'why' these two stayed behind. Stretch..begins to have a soft-spot for (Mike) and she also begins to fall for him. But, Dude..played by (Richard Widmark) and (Half Pint) played by Henry 'Harry' Morgan have other plans in mind. But as they come to find-out (Mike) is pretty good with a shot-gun. The expression on (Richard Widmark's face are priceless.) Stretch soon comes to realize that he must do the right 'thing' rather than the wrong 'thing' to safe the woman that he now loves. It's a great tale that any movie-buff will enjoy. And (Anne Baxter) really does a good job in this film. You'll enjoy...Yellow Sky.
