ghcheese At the begging of this movie you may want to shut it off. Kind of ridiculous. But as you watch you will find this story a true Horror. If you ever payed attention to people in your lives or you see on the street you may find you met people just like them. The overdone makeup on an old woman who tried to act like daddy's little girl. Meanwhile you have a nag that has sucked the life right out of her. You will shriek in terror at this duo.
Prismark10 What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? is a melodrama of the grotesque shot in stark black and white. Two ageing actresses Bette Davis and Joan Crawford play two has beens living in a cycle of hate and vengeance.Blanche Hudson (Joan Crawford) was a glamorous actress in the 1930s crippled in a car accident where her sister was thought to be the driver.'Baby' Jane Hudson (Bette Davis) was a major child star in the beginning of the 20th century. She was spoilt and taunted her sister Blanche who will find fame when she is older. By the 1930s Jane's career declines as she is not as talented as Blanche. In the present days (1960s) both are forgotten and living in gothic mansion. Jane is a drunk, getting madder everyday, being cruel to Blanche and dreaming of a come back on the stage. Blanche is wasting away upstairs in her bedroom, starved and living is despair, gagged and bound.Only their black maid shows concern but Jane gets rid of her, however Jane's madness leads to murder.Bette Davis went to the edge for her unhinged portrayal as Jane, even applying her own makeup. Crawford is more sedate but still manages to get under the skin of her sister when she in in her wheelchair. Both taunt each other unmercilessly because of past slights. It really is a claustrophobic chiller, another cynical film of shattered dreams of Hollywood and fame. Even the subplot about cash strapped pianist Edwin Flagg (Victor Buono) is another player who did not make it in Hollywood.
Charles Herold (cherold) This 60s thriller ingeniously casts two faded Hollywood stars as ... two faded Hollywood stars. While Joan Crawford's Blanche is stuck in a wheelchair Bette Davis's Jane takes care of her. Bitter that her career as a child vaudeville star was eclipsed by Blanche's adult career, Davis drinks, looks through her old scrapbooks, and, unfortunately for Blanche, begins to lose her mind.Davis commits fully to her bizarre character, starting out as a slatternly drudge and slowly going over the edge. There is a bravery to Davis' role most notable in her extraordinary recreation of Jane's childhood act. Victor Buono is also excellent as a rather peculiar pianist. While I've never been a big Crawford fan, she is quite good as Blanche, whose genial indulgence of her sister slowly turns to terror. The movie is a classic of its kind and necessary viewing for fans of Davis and/or 60s thrillers.
Vic_max Never heard of this classic until the series "Feud" highlighted the on-set tension between the two aging Hollywood greats, Joan Crawford and Bette Davis (I decided to see this before watching the series). This is a very-well acted story about two sisters living together. Rose had early fame as a child stage performer while Blanche enjoyed Hollywood fame in the movies as an adult. Rose, showing early signs of narcissism and sociopathy as a child, is now acting as a cruel caretaker for Blanch, who was crippled in a car accident. It's exasperating to see how blind Blanche acts towards the bizarre behavior of Rose. She's clearly suffering from sort of pathological denial herself. It's almost like watching a Rob Zombie movie in which good natured people get trapped and suffer increasing levels of abuse -- and we have to sit through it.The fact that 55 years have passed since this movie opened and one can still feel disturbed while watching it is a testament to the acting abilities of Davis and Crawford. Watch this, then watch the series "Duel" to see what when down during the movie's production.
