AshUnow This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
Nayan Gough A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Juana what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Jack I am very glad I picked this movie. This was my second favorite movie I have seen this year, just behind Sin nombre. In this movie the main character struggled from a young age where his mother was sick and his father seemed to be abusive. He ran away when he was a child and grew up without parents somewhere in South Africa. He slept in pipes and turned to a life of crimes with some other kids who seemed to not have their parents. The first scene in the movie shows where the group of kids kill a man on a subway with an ice pick. Tsotsi, the main character, becomes aggravated by one of his friends and beats him up, then runs away. He steals a car from a women, he shot her in the process. However, he didn't realize that her baby was in the car. He leaves the car on the side of the road and takes the baby. He wants to raise the baby as his own. He seems to love this baby. He finds out that the mother who he shot survived. In the end, similar to an American movie, he gives the baby back to the father and mother.
FilmCriticLalitRao South African film 'Tsotsi' presents the stark reality of shanty towns where youngsters resort to violent crimes as the only desirable way of moving forward in life. There is not much for them to do as they while away their time dancing over a couple of drinks in a nearby bar or killing innocent people for money. It is said that nobody can change anybody in life. It is only the circumstances which have the power to change an individual. This effect is viewed in this film as a young hoodlum with a troubled past decides to question his selfish ways. One has to marvel at the manner in which violence has been portrayed in the film. The use of physical force is very raw as no character hesitates in being trigger happy at the drop of a hat. For directing Tsotsi, South African director Gavin Hood chose the only novel written by veteran author Athol Fugard which portrays how there are moments in life when even an extremely violent person can experience feelings of genuine love.
rasko02 A brilliant story told about life in the townships of South Africa. Giving the view of what life is like for some in SA. Displaying economic and social problems that part of the world provide. Displaying the best of Independent film making. Acting of super class level. So truful and compelling. The film on site locations really gave the whole film a sense of realism. At times a difficult film to watch because of the nature of the film and it realistic feel and look. So great that the film was performed not in English. It made the story that more gritty. Style of the film put you in with cast. Moment in this film were so powerful it left many in tears. A very important film - A MUST SEE.
jrmontalvo3 Tsotsi directed by Gavin Hood was a story based in Africa, showing a different side that many people do not realize that a lot of that country has many issues that are addressed throughout this movie. In Tsotsi we start off following Tsotsi, who is a young adult probably around the age of sixteen or eighteen, and his buddies Aap, Boston, and Butcher. These four partners commit crimes to makes money called "jobs", the first job we as the viewers get to witness is when Tsotsi and the three friends follow a high roller man into a subway and rob him, and while robbing him they kill this innocent man. Later on through the story Tsotsi is on his own, alone and kind of nervous, he sees a lady pull up in a nice house and is locked out of her gate, so while she isn't paying attention Tsotsi steals her car as she runs toward him he shoots her. Little did he know that a baby was in that back seat, at first Tsotsi was about to leave the baby, but decided to take him to his house. As the movie progress you see that Tsotsi grows into a different young man, with the responsibilities of the child he has taken, has shaped him in a way that helps him understand life and the meaning to it. However, Tsotsi has to make the biggest decision of his life, which is to take the baby back to its rightful family. In doing this he decides to take the baby to his mother and father, by turning himself in, but as you witness something new in Tsotsi as the parents ask for the baby it is hard for him to let go, because how attached he had become to the baby or "his new life".
