ThedevilChoose When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.
Usamah Harvey The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
Marva It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
trippstadt-151-347634 Almost shockingly, many of the reviewers here have voiced stories almost eerily similar to my own. I happened upon this movie one late night approx. 38 years ago, and simply NEVER forgot it. Around 10 years ago or so, I searched for and found a VHS tape of it, and a couple of years ago, I got a DVD of it online. This is, simply, one of my very most favorite movies ever. I wanted to note that, as of this morning at any rate, the ENTIRE film is available for streaming on you tube.I don't wish to repeat the same specific comments voiced by others, but would like to focus on one particular aspect of the film; its patient and tender depiction of the "falling in love" process itself. The lazy and impatient manner through which most modern films depict how people fall in love strains credibility, and poses a real challenge to the viewer's ability to care about the supposedly deeply intense love relationship between the characters. How often do we see two characters "lock eyes" for a few extra moments upon meeting, and voilà, they are committed to a passionate and lifelong love relationship; ready to die for each other? All too often is my answer. In this film, you believe it. Their need for each other, though for perhaps somewhat different reasons, is palpable and honest. Today, "love stories" focus so much more on how characters REMAIN in love, or how they overcome hurdles to their love, and hardly bother to take on the challenge of making the audience believe that they ever fell in love in the first place, which is, for me, far more interesting (and apparently, far more difficult to depict believably).I think of the modern films noted for their love story narratives, like "The Fault in Our Stars". Of course the two protagonists fell in love. They're both impossibly attractive, they share this common enemy (cancer), and they're both incredibly clever and lovable. Even though their love was not expressed mutually until near the end, really they were in love (again) almost from the first moment they laid eyes on each other. Far more interesting would have been a story where she and the kid who eventually lost his eyesight fell in love, and the events leading up to that. But, again, that would have been likewise far more challenging to the author / screenwriter. But, no such problem with this film. They took on this difficult challenge and succeeded in an extremely satisfying way.
guardian590 This movie REEKS of macho-ism, A classic frontier life saga, with action/adventure, romance, intrigue, Death. It has Great wilderness/nature shots, decent stage work, great extras, great writing & a simple story line. Ollie & Rita are just fantastic. My favorite scene & line was when Ollie bought the girl..... "A thousand dollars for a woman who cant talk???........Better than one who talks too much" !!!....... roflmao.....didn't take Ollie long to decide,....Here Take......Ohhhh yea.I've seen several versions of this marvelous flick....from its intro on cable when i was a little pup in 1966-67, ....& YES it made a big impression on that little lad.I didn't see again till the video rental craze in the late 80's early 90's, was gonna buy the tape when the video store went out of business,......but the greedy P*&^$s wanted $70 for a used rental tape,..little wonder they closed.... then cables crappy cut versions,.....what a sin. PRAISE TCM for running it UNCUT. I had several copies but lost them in a tragedy. I finally found a respectably priced DVD after years of searching. Thank God for bootleggers and torrents.
blackkatdemon The Trap is a really, really, good movie. It has a great musical score to it, the movie is filmed out in the Canadian wildness, and on a lot in London. Like most movies from the 1960's it is very colorful, and beautiful to watch. It's like watching the old Disney movies like Charlie the Lonesome Cougar. The Trap is about a women named Eve (Rita Tushingham) who as a kid watched her family get killed by Indian's. From the traumatic event she don't talk at all, and has been since mute. She's took in by a store keeper and his wife, and their daughter. They raise Eve up to being somewhat their own maid, and go to person. The store keeper also has the trapper's money he has been holding onto for 2 years. Him and his wife are wanting to go back to San Francisco, & were told the trapper was dead. The trapper shows up when it's marrying time the local ferry brings in wife's that the men pay for. Close to a thousand bucks a piece to get them out of jail, and brought up to the town. La Bete show's up bringing in fur's to trade for money and to get money the store owner been keeping for him. As well as wanting a wife, even after all the women are sold off. After wards just buying a new gun, rum, food, and candies. The French Canadian trapper Jean (pronounced John) La Bete (Oliver Reed). When La Bete goes to the store owner's house to get his money he's surprised at some of the stuff the keeper has in his house. After he get's his money, which the store keeper's wife is not to happy. She tells Eve to get herself all dressed up, and takes her down to the edge of town. She meets up with La Bete and tell's him Eve's story, saying she is young, strong and would make a good wife. The keeper's wife gets paid for Eve, and now Eve's told she has to go with La Bete. Eve's not happy, fights with La Bete, and get's told to stay in the canoe.Eve's taught by La Bete how to hunt, trap, fish, and even cut wood. La Bete is a jerk, messy, throws food on the ground, and has no manners. Eve and La Bete have their clashes the first year they are together. La Bete get's hurt Eve nurse's him back to health, and in the end they well.....you have to watch this movie to find out the ending.
nadiatrifler This movie should have its place among the great classics, and its no exaggeration... Somehow it's been underrated, unfortunately. I saw this movie some 10 years ago, and I never forgot it... Ten years later, I watched it again, thinking that I react differently to it, but no... I loved it even more, now that I'm old enough to appreciate the actors' interpretations, which are just perfect in this movie... Rita Tushingham is wonderful in her role, without having to say a single word through the whole movie; she thrills you just by her presence and a perfect use of her facial expressions... It just shows how to be a great actress is not in a perfect face and a perfect figure...It takes much more to charm... And then you have Oliver Reed's performance which just adds to the perfect timing of this movie... His performance is one that you cannot forget, just like Rita's ; a great love story filled with adventure, where just the right things are said, and just the right things are shown. I couldn't say enough about this movie... I think it's one of those special cinematic moments... It's done so simply, and yet you know that it takes a lot of great talent to make it look so simple. A last comment (haha) : WHEN WILL IT BE ON DVD????!!!!!!! it deserves to be on DVD !
