juggler24960 Like many others, I first saw this masterpiece by accident, as far as I can remember in 1976 (hot summer) at about one in the morning.I can only agree with all the comments posted so far with a small addition. Did anyone else notice that (spoiler warning) all the victims seemed, by their clothing and age, to be middle management guys who were probably past their (for want of a better word) best?It was a detail that really struck me. Was the sinister phone company ridding the city of these rather useless people for some reason? Maybe my memory is playing tricks but when the protagonist looked around him at his final destination, they all looked like that type; balding, mid-forties, short stature and cheap suits. Also, when he is travelling on the back of the truck he sees an identical phone box with a man in it. The door is closed, the man finishes (or fails to make) a call and then, after some attempts, opens the door and steps out. This man is younger, taller, has a good head of hair and a well fitting suit. The phone box didn't want him! Please post if you agree or disagree!I still watch this short from time to time, my copy is a VHS rip unfortunately and the quality is dire, but this is a completely wonderful thing that should, as others have said, have a much wider viewing in it's original quality. In conclusion, I love this film and have traumatised my children with it, just as I was traumatised by it so many years ago. I am saying that this is a good thing because anything that can have such a deep impact should be seen by anyone who wants to be really affected by great cinema. I put it right up there with the first time I saw Star Wars, Close Encounters, Jurassic Park, Finding Nemo, Toy Story....OK, I could go on forever, you get the idea.If you love it, share it.Juggler24960.
Imdbidia The Phone Box is one of the most impacting intriguing shorts I have ever seen. The film mixes the theater of the absurd with some white horror and a psychological exploration of the character. It has a great atmosphere, a great performance by the leading actor, and a fantastic ending. The story is able to convey the viewer the character's anxiety, claustrophobic feelings and sense of hopelessness. Rightly deserving of the Emmy it won in 1973.The main actor is Jose Luis Lopez Vazquez, a popular actor in the 1970s, known mostly because of his comedies and his likable characters. He showed his dramatic side in this short and blew most viewers away; probably not as impacting if you have never seen his old movies and performances. The story relies on his performance to be successful and he delivered. The director is a classic of Spanish TV known for his TV family series and light movies. This was his first work as TV director and, wow, what a way to start. Probably the best thing he has ever done.I have watched thousands of movies and shorts and this is one of those that still stands fresh in my memory, mostly because I watched it when I was a teen, and I found it utterly cool and utterly disturbing.
natalieshepherd73 Wow, I'm in my late 30's and for years thought I had imagined watching this film because everyone I described it to thought I was nuts. Obviously my memories of 30+ years ago are a little muddled but I do remember being home sick and watching this short film on the TV during the daytime. It was so disturbing, that as others who have posted say, I never again used a telephone box without propping the door open with my foot! Even now this film sticks with me, especially the end which frightened me for years. Now I must try to locate a copy to show everyone who doubted me. Brilliantly realistic and ultimately one of the scariest films I've ever seen.
Prof-Hieronymos-Grost A man gets trapped in a new phone box. He becomes ever more worried as the efforts of passers by and then the emergency services fail to free him. He goes through a range of emotions from out right fear to embarrassment as passers by, alternate between helping and laughing at his plight. What at first seems like a plot fit for a comedy becomes ever more dark, culminating in the darkest of dark endings, said to be an allegory for things that happened under the fascist state set up by Franco. The film is glorious in its simplicity and plays almost like a silent film with very little dialogue, to such an extent that even subtitles aren't really required to get the gist of this fantastic film. Made for Spanish TV, La Cabina is a powerful film that can't but fail to leave its impression in the mindset of its viewers, its devastating finale being the stuff of real nightmares, it has haunted me for over 30 years without ever losing any of its effectiveness.
