SpuffyWeb Sadly Over-hyped
Protraph Lack of good storyline.
Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
Hayden Kane There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
hellholehorror Considering the age it looks pretty good. The dialogue was clear but everything else lacked dynamism. It is so serious and quite slow but still quite entertaining for an old movie. Nothing compared to the remake though. It's very memorable because of it's position in popular culture but not because of the film.
dncorp It is now 59 years later, I had to watch The Blob 1958. As the idiots at NASA that do not have a Level 6 Quarantine Facility at some remote island are slapping themselves on the back, as NASA Space Probes are being sent to collect samples from other Planets, Asteroids, Meteorites, without any concerns for possible Earth Ending Events caused by these so called NASA "Geniuses".We don't need NASA to bring back Space Herpes (Spaceballs 1987), The Andromeda Strain 1971 microorganism, The Blob 1958 and 1988, The Night of the Living Dead 1968 zombie virus, and many more, we have enough problems with "Scientists" searching to dig up corpses with live Spanish Flu viruses, "Scientists" digging under Mayan Temples with sealed tombs filled with those that died of something that may have wiped out the Mayans in the area, "Scientists" digging up frozen Pre Historic animals that may contain dormant frozen Pre Historic Pathogens, Deadly Micro Organisms, Parasites, flesh eating bacteria.Supposedly there is going to be a 2017 Remake of The Blob. Should have a NASA Spacecraft like NASA's OSIRIS-REx bring back a sample that turns into THE BLOB 2017 devouring all the idiot "Scientists" at NASA as a consequence of their Stupid.
sol- Emerging from a crashed meteor, a red blob terrorises a small town, increasing in mass with every citizen devoured, in this low budget horror film that attempts to fuse drama and horror elements. The drama is quite decent, with belief in the blob representing a social divide between the cynical adults and open-minded, alienated teenagers of the 1950s, with both groups having to work together to defeat it. The dramatic side of the film leads to much talk and little action though, and whenever the teens engage in daredevil driving or romance, it is an unwelcome distraction from the antagonistic blob. Then again, the blob is never all that fearsome since it is hardly ever seen as we mostly just see characters reacting to it. Also, whenever it is on screen, it looks more cuddly than menacing. As the blob seems to move at a very slow pace, it is additionally difficult to view it as threatening; its only scary moment is when it latches onto a curious elderly farmer who makes the mistake of touching the slow-moving creature. The film is additionally beset by an abrupt ending, a terrible child performance (from Keith Almoney as the heroine's whiny brother) and the awkwardness of everyone calling Steve McQueen a kid when he was 28 at the time of filming... and looks older. Then again, as the only really skilled actor in the midst, McQueen does gives the film some class as one truly feels for his struggle to get the townspeople to believe his wild and fantastic story. The theme song is very catchy too and the film makes for decent repeat viewing, providing one enters with low expectations.
Jeff Parker This is a typical "horror movie" from the 50's era so it's gotta be good! Actually I prefer "B" movies that are so bad they are good, yet this was enjoyable without being in the "B" movie class. One of Steve McQueen's earliest rolls and while the script was a wee bit cheesy, he did a great job with it. Don't just rent this one, buy it! It will provide countless hours of entertainment picking it apart for errors as you watch it over and over. If you haven't seen the movie yet don't read this until you do! I'm pretty sure the objective was to destroy the "monster" but that seems impossible. The best they could do was freeze it. To keep it frozen they transport it to the Artic where is will "hopefelly" remain frozen forever. In the last scene we see "The Blob" strapped to a pallet as it is gently lowered to the frozen wasteland by parachute. Then the clouds morph into a giant question mark. As if to ask... Will it remain frozen? Apparently we aren't supposed to question the need for parachutes so it can be "safely" lowered it to the ice cap. After all nobody would want to cause any. Harm to the horrible monster they were trying to destroy.
