Siflutter It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
Arianna Moses Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Juana what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Sober-Friend This film has more things in common with "American Graffiti" than "Saturday Night Fever". Where American Graffiti had several stories that take place on one evening so does "TGIF". "Saturday Night Fever" background was dancing but the main story is about a boy becoming a man. Disco music and having a day in the week is the only thing "SNF" and "TGIF" have in common .This film takes place in a dance club called "The Zoo". One story is married couple may not be married too much longer after a night in this club. ANother story is 2 teens sneak into the club hoping to win the dance contest.Debra Winger and Jeff Goldblum has parts. Donna Summer sings "Last Dance" and she proves she could of been a good actress!Lots of fun. Perfect Summer time viewing!
Wizard-8 It's hard to believe this movie was directed by the same Robert Klane who contributed to hilarious movies like WHERE'S POPPA? and FIRE SALE - it's easier to believe it was directed by the same Robert Klane who gave us movies like FOLKS! and WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S. Judging by how the movie plays out, it seems he was determined to direct just about every scene in the dullest and slowest way possible. To be fair, he was saddled with a screenplay that is incredibly unfunny, not just with absolutely lame attempts at humor, but often forgetting to try and be funny in the first place. Also, he didn't exactly have a stellar cast at hand; miscasting is abound, especially with the bizarre decision to cast Jeff Goldblum as the disco club owner who's a ladies' man (!) The one exception is with Chick Vennera - he at least puts some life in his cliched role, enough so that he alone makes one scene - the parking lot dance piece - fun to watch. Overall not recommended, not even just for the soundtrack; despite the Commodores making a few contributions, you'd be better off buying one of their greatest hits albums instead.
perni I picked up a copy of this from Wal-Mart for like 4 bucks, thinking it would be yet another wonderfully horrible disco musical for me to cringe at and enjoy at the same time. Sadly, Thank God It's Friday is not nearly as loathsome as Can't Stop the Music, which set a bench mark for bad musicals that could only be reached by From Justin to Kelly. The story (such as it is here) follows about 500 characters as they dance the night away at a disco club called The Zoo (oh brother). The big event of the night is the dance contest, which doesn't occur until the movie's last few minutes and is not at all epic or exciting. I say the flick has about 500 characters because it literally does. There are so many people here that trying to invest any interest in them is pretty much impossible. Just when you're starting to figure out who certain characters are, the movie zips to the other side of the club and we meet a dozen or more new guys and gals. There's the two girls who want to win the contest so they can buy KISS tickets, the DJ who has to prove himself on his first night at the club, a budding singer who just needs a big break, an angry short fellah whose blind date is an insanely tall, shy woman, a dorky guy and a nice guy who are looking for love, a party gal and a nice gal who are looking for love, a woman who needs some fun in her life but is married to a complete stiff, a stud (played by JEFF GOLDBLUM, mind you) who makes bets with the DJ on who he can get back to his apartment, etc. etc. etc. Needless to say, the story is pretty much nonexistent, with a cameo by The Commodores barely registering on the Interesting Scale. The best part of the entire movie is when the girl who wants to be a singer, played by Donna Summers, sings the groovy hit The Last Dance. What surprised me is how the movie is rated PG but has a lot of cursing as well as drug use. I guess that back in the 70's this kind of material was seen as pretty tame. Also, the comedy struck me as being awfully cornball, and the running jokes were either stupid to begin with or made no sense at all (what is up with the Tarzan waiter, anyway?!). But, as I said before, this is a masterpiece when compared to garbage like Can't Stop the Music. Watchable, but still kind of stinky. 1.5/4 stars
dgordon-1 This is about the only "disco" movie that I have ever liked. To me, it really captures the time & spirit of the late '70s disco craze. Everyone from Debra Winger and her co-worker looking for guys that don't wear polyester, to the great music of the Commodores and Donna Summer make this a nice slice of '70s nostalgia. Everything '70s is represented in this movie: 8-tracks, platform shoes, bell-bottom pants, leisure suits, I think there is even a Ford Pinto in the parking lot of the disco. I feel that this movie never got the recognition that it deserved. It seemed to be drowned out by "Saturday Night Fever" and "Can't Stop The Music". If you are looking for a movie that will bring back the feeling of the '70s, this one is a great choice.
