Synopsis

When NATO troops withdrew from Afghanistan, the Afghan National Army (ANA) took over control of Helmand Province, an extremely dangerous region where attacks by Taliban fighters are the order of the day. Security, much less peace, would seem to be unattainable; it is even difficult to find a common language in a country where everyone mistrusts each other. The directors of this film accompanied an ANA company during a year of frontline duty in Helmand. The soldiers are paid irregularly, there are not enough supplies and their equipment is substandard. They cannot fight a war with the equipment left behind by the ISAF.

Reviews

StyleSk8r At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Ezmae Chang This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
Logan By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Ruben de Jong What makes this documentary so good is the human factor and the amount of guts of the film crew. The fighting scenes are filmed in the best way i have ever seen, this is how it goes. This may seem odd to say this, but as the son of a veteran this means a lot. People still have that "Hollywood idea" about a firefight, and about war as a whole. The camera work is very good, the quality is very high and the close ups of the faces tell the whole story. The scene near the end when they escape encirclement the relief can be seen all over their faces. The kids waving and smiling are so in contrast with what these men have seen, that really showed war in his true nature: Chaos and extremes.
Fordifyed This film follows the soldiers in an Afghan national battalion as they live and fight amidst confusion in what seems like a futile environment. This isn't about politics, religion, or action and melodrama. It is about the people fighting for what remains of their country. We see on the news chaotic scenes of gun fire in the middle east and its easy to forget that there are people behind those guns with family and friends. After watching this film, I'm left wondering that if the same documentary could be made in the Taliban camp; would it really be that much different. In my opinion that's what makes this film powerful; strip away all the ideology and hate, and what's left is the same stuff me and you are made of.
