BA_Harrison An explosion in a chemical facility releases a deadly toxin that affects the human nervous system, causing much of the population to become uncontrollably aggressive. Trapped in the danger zone, Jim (Jay Hayden) finds refuge in a nearby farm building, but after a narrow escape from one of the victims, he accepts an invitation to join a small group of survivors—Scott (Scott Lilly), Julie (Kathryn Todd Norman) and Ix (Tori White)—who are holed up in a nearby warehouse. Together, they try to keep those affected by the toxin at bay until help arrives. These days, anyone with a few friends, a camera and a computer can become a horror film-maker, with the zombie/infected sub-genre being the easiest to exploit judging by the glut of low-budget undead crap-fests released in recent years on DVD for the unsuspecting horror fan to chance upon.As part of a three movie DVD set that I bought for a pound, I fully expected State of Emergency to be one such steaming turd of a movie. However, I was happy to be proved wrong: thanks to a smart script that delivers plausible characters behaving in a believable fashion, assured handling from writer/director Turner Clay, realistic dialogue, a leisurely but atmospheric approach, and mostly decent performances (only Scott Lilly's rather wooden performance lets down the side a bit), this turned out to be one of the better low-budget zombie/infected movies I've seen over the years.Clay's script manages to stay away from many of the clichés prevalent in the genre: the action takes a back seat to the involving drama, every character is likable—there are no stereotypical douche-bags among the survivors—and we get an upbeat ending for a change. The movie's early scenes, in which Jim finds himself alone in a deserted, wind-battered farm building, prove particularly effective, Clay making great use of his isolated location, wringing every ounce of tension from the set-up, each flickering light, deep shadow and unfamiliar noise adding to the suspense.
jennifers_collection Acting was sub par, opening scene was slow and really set the mood for the whole movie. Slow. There was a huge lack of "zombies" if that's what you want to call them. There was not much emotion and you barely learned anything about the characters. The time frame of this movie was also ridiculous. I don't think it was even really a life or death situation for these characters as long as they stayed hidden. Maybe two weeks at most? Also it seemed the actors/actresses showed up to work, read their script and repeated them out loud and their day was done. I know this is minor but they called the soldiers in the movie marines. While they were clearly Army. That not a detail that should be overlooked.
Anna Heidick This movie is basically what I would think normal people would do in the event of a zombie apocalypse. Which is really just stay inside, barricade yourself, and wait for rescue. The movie sorta centers on daily living of four people. It isn't very action centered. Just them waiting and such. So if you're wanting a massive zombie, action, horror, this probably isn't the movie for you. In my opinion the main character I found a bit slow. Mostly because he had long pauses before he would speak. It doesn't really matter but the fact stuck with me. It was even more apparent the longer the movie went. Overall I didn't love this movie but I didn't hate it either. It was just okay. Probably similar to what I would do in their situation. Which is why it wasn't amazing. Do to lack of action. But it was good considering. As long as you didn't come for a ton of action it's a fine film.
Josh With apocalypse movies on the rise and the media being over saturated with movies of this kind, a lot of movies have plots and tropes that get spread over all of them. Luckily this movie does NOT share that in common.I had this movie playing in the background while doing some chores until a scene really interested me. So I quickly reminded, sat down and watched the whole movie. That's when I realized that even gems can be found on netflix and not just stupid background movies. This movie takes all these apocalypse and zombie tropes and throws them away for a better, calmer, and nicer script. As I said, the movie is slower, but it goes for a more psychological and more realistic view on what people would do in a State of Emergency. I honestly extremely enjoyed this movie just for being different, but it goes beyond that. The cast is likable and while there's not a lot of talking in the beginning of the film, it makes sense and character development as well as story development is displayed very well in other ways. It's rare for the acting to dip as the characters are very well wrote and casted. This movie is good enough that I'd buy it. This movie is better then most of the crap that has made it to theaters recently. I usually don't like slower paced movies but this one keeps you interested even if it is at a slower moment. So in the end the movie is free on streaming, it's original, it's not full of tropes, and it's amazing! How can you go wrong?
