Mjeteconer Just perfect...
Livestonth I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible
Invaderbank The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
twiss54 Of course, the Duke delivers, albeit as a caricature of, himself, but the rest of the cast, except Jack Elam and David Huddleston, is a pain to watch. I believe the piece of trivia that said Wayne felt Elam was a scene-stealer. He chewed up the scenery and spit it out. Jennifer O'Neill got a lot better between this film and 'Summer of '42.' I think Howard Hawks was wise to write her out of the last part of this film.
Leofwine_draca The third and final film in Howard Hawks's famous trilogy of westerns starring John Wayne; the first was RIO BRAVO and the second EL DORADO. This late-stage entry in the genre is far better than I was expecting, a bright and colourful western with an interesting cast and an ageing star who still has the power to kick backside with the best of them. The opening of RIO LOBO is particularly astute, featuring a heist on a train carrying a gold shipment which is very well directed and exciting. Wayne plays the usual stock hero and wrings maximum presence out of his part, only this time around he's supported by a mixture of old hands (Jack Elam) and new faces (Mexican star Jorge Rivero and Christopher Mitchum). The narrative slows down after the first section which is understandable given the passage of time. However, it soon picks up in scenes which are very reminiscent of RIO BRAVO, and keeps bubbling along pretty well until the action climax. I did find the villains to be rather weak in this film but the heroes are so larger than life that it doesn't really matter. Jennifer O'Neill's female lead is an irritant rather than an asset but she's not bad enough to spoil what is an overall fun picture.
Robert D. Ruplenas I'm as big of a John Wayne fan as anyone but this has to be one of the worst films I have ever seen in which he starred. I have seen conflicting information in this space about what Hawks thought about his last effort, but it's difficult to believe that the same man who directed The Big Sleep, His Girl Friday, To Have and Have Not, Twentieth Century and Red River turned out this dog. The main problem is the level of the acting. Wayne turns in the only decent performance in the film. The quality of each and every one of the supporting cast is universally abysmal, excepting David Huddleston. Not only that the plot line seems to get bogged down about halfway through. The script is pretty tacky as well. I managed to get about halfway through before I couldn't take anymore.
SanteeFats This movie starts in the Civil War and progresses from there. I don't know if the Rebs ever had an with a Latin accent but it is okay. The bee hive trick is a nice switch from blocking and blowing up the train. Wayne plays what appears to be his favorite rank, a Union colonel. He catches the two Rebs who engineered the robbery, jails them and meets them when the war is over to try and find out who the Union traitor was. Now civilians they proceed the town of Rio Lobo Here they run into Jennifer O'Neill who does a poor acting job in my opinion. They meet Jack Elam in town and he joins the team. I think Elam is fantastic in this role, funny as all get out. Of course they eventually find the bad guy and his crew, fight it out and win.
