KnotStronger This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
mrstrangerjones I have been trying to watch all of the films directed by Aaron Scott Moorhead and Justin Benson (excluding that segment of VHS: Viral, cause I want to actually watch a GOOD movie) before eventually watching and reviewing "The Endless".The first film of theirs that I watched was "Spring", which I thought was a compelling romance drama with horror elements sprinkled in.Now, I have watched their first film, "Resolution". And it was pretty good.PROS: I thought the performances were pretty good, especially that of Vinny Curran. He plays a character who is going through withdrawal. This kind of role is normally hard to pull off, but Curran did a great job. It felt really realistic. The concept was a really unique one. The only other time that I've heard of a horror movie involving someone easing their friend through withdrawal was 2013's "Evil Dead", but all similarities end there. This movie is quite different. I won't say what exactly the film is about, because it's so outlandish that I think others should learn about it themselves.I think the cinematography was pretty good when it came to the context. Normally, one would say that it kinda felt like amateur filmmaking, but I think that that was the point. Again, I won't go into details, but it fits the context of the story.CONS: I like slow burns in films, especially in horror films. However, I felt that this film didn't really afford to be as slow as it was. When I got halfway through the movie, the first thought that came into my mind was "When is something actually going to happen?"I feel that there were a lot of plot elements in this movie that didn't really feel like they should all be in the same movie. It tried to be a drama about addiction and friendship, a horror movie, and a twisty mind-screw all in the same movie. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.Overall, this movie was really good, and I do recommend it, as well as the other movies directed by Moorhead/Benson.
max-seitz-1990 Resolution is an independent horror movie with supernatural elements. It transcends various genre tropes and portrays a look into the inner fabric of horror narratives, exposing the viewer's voyeuristic tendencies regarding the fate of the onscreen characters. It does so with a very modest budget - however, the drawbacks regarding actor's performances and the technical production never compromise the movie's suspenseful mystery. The ending might be polarizing, however, it also makes the movie open for discussion, which is more than one can say about most horror movies.Overall 7/10 Full review on movie-discourse.blogspot.de
re-animatresse i decided to check out this movie after i watched writer/director-duo Justin Benson's and Aaron Moorhead's Spring its strong points are the acting, especially by Vinny Curran, who's been featured in all three of Benson's and Moorhead's feature films to date and not much else. his character's mental illness and meth-addiction-and-induced psychosis are convincing enough that i have to wonder if he and/or Benson have experienced it firsthand. the dialogue and relationship between the two leads seem very natural and are the primary driving force of the film i found the story a bit difficult to follow towards the end, though, particularly with regard to the rationale behind the sober lead's decision-making and conclusions he draws from the occurring phenomenon, which itself is an interesting and unique premise. the shaky hand-held-camera style is a minor annoyance all in all, i like the film; i'd watch it again, but i like Spring better. i wouldn't recommend this for everyone, and it could be triggering for recovering addicts, so take care
Lelio Mulas It's a very cool and original movie! You come for the scares and stay for the bromance. The chemistry between the guys is so strong, and most importantly 'natural', that after the first act I was like 'ok, not what I expected but I'm in anyways'. The silly 'supernatural' plot point is riding that Spinal Tap 'fine line between stupid and clever' and the ending, which I'm sure lots of people will hate, is that kind of 'open' ending that lets you baffled, confused but at least in my case NOT disappointed. It makes your brain cogs move and tick to find your explanations and interpretations, which I think is good and lets the movie stick with you for a while. Pretty good acting, the two leads are believable and likable. Yes, even meth-addict f-up Chris is a lovable a-hole. Very well shot, has an independent look (low contrast and saturation, old film look) that is serving well the story. You don't want crispy 4k crap for a movie like this. Nice tension overall, a couple of jumpy but legitimate scares, tone shifts in an awkward, bumpy way sometimes but nothing too annoying. Give it a try if you are sick of paranormal activities, annabelles and devils inside.
