TrueHello Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
Staci Frederick Blistering performances.
kasumiwater The Porcelain Unicorn is not a novel work like scientific fiction. Rather the background of the story where a German boy meets a Jewish girl sounds very realistic if you know the history of Germany during WWII. Though the setting is dark as you may see, the short film is so touching and even made me happy after watching. I think this emotional effect highly relies on the film's structure. The director did a great job in that he connected an old protagonist in the beginning, young protagonists in the middle, and back to the old protagonists at the end naturally. You can stay sympathizing them without being distracted while watching. The porcelain unicorn, not the title but an item in the film, also plays a crucial part in the film. The delivered images of porcelain such as pure or fragile resonates with that of characters' throughout the story. The unicorn is not just a toy passed among characters but a key object that portrays characters indirectly. Speaking of indirectness, there are some lines that can be interpreted in more that one way. I have already watched it twice and will watch it again, looking for new discoveries.
1003hijuyp When I was in my childhood, I did not have any bias for the world. As I grew up, I have got a lot of bias for things, because I have learned a lot of knowledge including not only useful or good ideas to understand the world, mechanisms of society and so on, but also mean thoughts to protect myself or to have a better position than other people. Perhaps, people call such state "an adult," but actually is it "an adult"? I do not feel so. I think some parts of me have become mature, but others have turned to immature. When I was a child, I could speak to someone without prejudice, but now I cannot. If I were the German boy in the movie, I could not say anything to the Jewish girl because of biases I have, because she is a target of discrimination for Germans at the time. The boy is not as mature as I, because I have had more experiences than he had when he was in 1943, but as for braveness and purity, he is more mature than I. After I watched this movie, I recognized the importance of naïveté, because it does not generate any anti-feeling against anything, and it leads to equality towards anyone. I cannot get back naivety like him and, but I try to communicate with anyone with respect, bravery, and equality. This movie gave me an opportunity to think that.
supamu What is that? It's a unicorn. Never seen one up close before. Beautiful. Get away. Get away. I'm sorry. In this movie, only these six sentences are used. We first realize this scene was about 1940's by the scene that focuses on the mark "star of David" on her clothes. It's a symbol of Jewish nation. Men whose appearance is scary are maybe the Nazis. In the third line, the period backgrounds were expressed. The boys who seem to find something were maybe working under them. One of the boys looked at the mark and said to her "Never seen one up close before." The time of Jew-baiting, he saw the mark so close and longer for the first time. I think then he realized the beauty of the believing what she thinks is right, that it is beautiful. So, when the unicorn is broken by a man, he must feel empty. How else would he send her a unicorn when he got old? Unicorn is their bridge. It saved both of them. If their destiny had been over at that time, I would have felt inconsolable grief.
foodie03 I was moved by this film in spite of it only three minutes long. I found it great that such a short movie makes a film very interesting and people got moved. This story is about a German boy and a Jewish girl. After he saved her as a kid, he comes over to her house many decades later. Everyone might be touched with this last scene. He is so gentle and faithful. This film has little dialogue, however, so it is not difficult to catch the story. The unicorn bonds their hearts together. I think 'love' is the theme of this film as well as the representation of the unicorn. Besides, this film encourages us to overcome the race barrier.
