Synopsis

Vietnam veteran Billy Ray Lancing, a former CSA agent who now works on a wildlife refuge in Northern Alaska, has been exchanging letters in a pen-pal relationship with Irina Morawska, a 13-year-old orphaned girl in Poland that he's helping out financially. When the letters suddenly stop coming, Billy heads to Poland to figure out why -- only to discover that the orphanage that Irina was staying in, which is financed by honest -- and unsuspecting -- good-intentioned Samaritans, is a cover for a human trafficking network.

Noutions Good movie, but best of all time? Hardly . . .
Reptileenbu Did you people see the same film I saw?
Invaderbank The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
Maleeha Vincent It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
swedzin Don't expect anything from this film, with average story and mediocre characters. Steven Seagal (once a cool guy with cool films under his belt) gives us yet another portrait of himself, this time as a retired agent, former Vietnam veteran, blah blah, who is corresponding (pen-pal) with a orphan little girl from Poland and helps her financially. But, when he finds out that orphanage is used as human trafficking, he rushes to Poland and start the incredibly boring scenes of shooting, fighting and everything else in kinda boring and makes-you-sleepy-way. Seagal utters the line "she means everything to me". Is she your daughter? Damn! His character is so caring that he needs to destroy everything in his path for a little girl who he barely knows. Other actors as Robbie Gee and Matt Schulze did a solid job, but Schulze didn't do much with his character, he was only evil and that's it, he is also a expert swordsman and you know what that means when your opponent is Seagal who is an kendo expert... Nothing special to say about this film... except that is pretty boring. Yeah, and Seagal is dubbed by another actor, and that's fuc**ng disgusting! Don't waste your time, watch something more gun and intelligent like... Taken (2008), it's pretty similar, but more, much more better.
Frederick Smith Steven Seagal is perhaps the King of the B films, but he is also a cause driven individual who likes to make films that center around real problems. Renowned for his ability as a martial artist and his "I don't take any $h!@ from anyone." attitude, Seagal's films have unfortunately become formulaic and predictable. Seagal plays the former agent who has become disenchanted with the agency (Which agency? Does it really matter?) Naturally, he is in the wilderness, this time on a wildlife preserve, and is sponsoring an orphaned girl in Poland. While there are some moments of emotion, most of the time Steven plays the role with a lack of luster and motivation, like he is tired of making the same film for the 100th time. Matt Schulze is the one actor in the cast who stands out. His portrayal of Faisal, the operator of the human trafficking ring, is one dimensional, but its the right dimension. If you're going to be a bad guy, be a really bad guy. Nick Brimble's brief appearance is good, but Nick comes off as the man behind the scenes and his threat to Faisal lacks the true tone of contempt anyone would show for a man in that business. Overall, the film is slow to the point of boredom, predictable as a clock, and just plain poorly done. Rated R for violence, language, and a few scenes in an upscale brothel. If you happen to see this one on the shelf at your local video store, I'd let it collect dust, unless you are a big fan of Seagal, and even then I would take a moment and think about it.
Bjorn (ODDBear) I'm checking out these later direct-to-DVD films of Seagal after years of putting it off. Fearing the worst, I'd been a bit nervous about them having read such dire reviews for most of them."Out of Reach" is really not good. Which is a big shame 'cause there's a decent story here lurking about which is given shamefully bad (incompetent?)treatment and the result is a forgettable and overall bad movie.Human trafficking and the scumbags who deal in them is always a potential for powerful stuff. It's one of the most widespread problems the world faces and only the most despicable individuals involve themselves in it. Which is weird as well because it's so widespread. How can so many people be involved (directly or indirectly)?  Well,"Out of Reach" may have had a higher purpose at some point but all is lost in this nonsensical and absurdly ridiculous film. It tells the tale of a former CIA man with a past (Seagal) who's been corresponding with a young girl in an orphanage in Poland. The girl is taken away by some traffickers and once her letters stop coming, Seagal gets suspicious and goes looking for her.Implausibilities abound here as one ridiculous scenario is swiftly followed by another (the way the girl communicates with Seagal in codes is beyond absurd). The actors are bad, Seagal looks disinterested and, quite annoyingly, he's also partially dubbed by an actor who sounds nothing like him.Good points; solid fighting scenes. Seagal always looks solid in the action department and the final sword play scene is well executed, though it looks like it belongs in another film."Out of Reach" could have been an OK film about a very important subject. Sadly it's not.
tardigrade81 I am being very generous here giving it a 5.... It was not great, but at the same time it was not terrible either..... It did have some good action scenes that were done by Seagal himself. However the story line is typical, and the dubbing in his voice for added scenes (?) was just horrible and shows how low budget this movie is... I cant say much els about the movie, it was OK at best.... keep in mind I am basing this off his last few movies that were just horrible.... Foreigner, out for a kill etc etc... compared to those it was actually enjoyable. Its still not even close to his standard of movies like Out for Justice, Glimmer Man, Above the Law but we know what were getting from steven now and if this is all were getting then I thought it was actually OK.
