Claysaba Excellent, Without a doubt!!
Glucedee It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.
Ava-Grace Willis Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
Fleur Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
AaronCapenBanner Cy Endfield directed this non-Disney sequel to "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" also set during the Civil War by author Jules Verne. A group of Union soldiers escape from a Confederate prison in a nearby hot air balloon, only to float over the ocean into the south seas, where they land on the mysterious island of the title. There, they discover a land of giant animals, like a chicken and lobster, as well as the remains of pirates, who will later return to the island, which is their occasional hideout from the authorities. As if that wasn't enough, a volcano threatens to erupt, and then Captain Nemo(played by Herbert Lom, in place of James Mason) turns up... Exciting and well-made film has excellent F/X by Ray Harryhausen and an engrossing story with few lulls. A real classic of its kind, fine for adults as well as kids.
ma-cortes Fascinating adventures and glimmer scenarios along with colossal animals (such as an over-size crab, a giant hen and huge bees) , about a band of Union soldiers who flee a Conferate prison . This classic adaptation from Jules Verne novel starts on American Civil War , after the battle of Richmond . Union POWs , an official named Cyrus(James Craig who leads the gang) , Pencroff (Percy Herbert), a journalist (Gary Merrill) ,an African-American soldier and other prisoners escape from jail in an observation balloon and terminate stranded on a lonely South Pacific island . They must use their talents to survive dangers , facing off pirates and devise a way to return home . At the uncharted island find gigantic bugs such as a large chicken , giants crabs , monstrous bees and other enormous animals , among them . The team will have to utilize their ingenious to survive the risks and heinous attacks , making a barge to flee . They also find two shipwrecked women ( Joan Greenwood and a sexpot Beth Rogan ) who unite to the motley group . Off course , also encounter a lone captain Nemo and his riveting submarine of the future called Nautilus . Furthermore, an unstable volcano on the edge of eruption. This follow-up to ¨20.000 leagues under the sea¨ is an exciting fantasy-adventure full of special effects created by means of stop-motion technique by the magician Ray Harryhausen . The runtime is adequate with several incidents and sub-plots , taking too much liberties from original novel . The cast is great but wasted, as weak performance by Herbert Lom with brief performance at the ending and notorious British actors as James Craig , Gary Merrill , Percy Herbert and Joan Greenwood as the washed up woman . Colorful cinematography by Wilkie Cooper with excessive matte-painting , being filmed on location in Benidorm, Alicante,Costa Brava, Paltja d'Aro, Girona, Cataluña, Spain and Shepperton Studios, Shepperton, Surrey, England, (studio). Rousing and thrilling musical score by Bernard Herrmann , Hitchcock's usual . The motion picture is well directed by Cy Endfield and stands out the creatures designed by the master Ray Harryhausen, it's the best adaptation of the known novel .Other versions based on this classic story are the following : 1) Silent rendition made in 1929 ; 2) European take on by Juan Antonio Bardem(1973) with Omar Shariff as captain Nemo , Rick Battaglia , and Gerard Tichy 3) 2005 TV version with Kyle Maclachlan , Gabrilelle Anwar, Omar Gooding , Vinnie Jones, Roy Marsden and Patrick Stewart as Nemo and directed by Russell Mulcahy.
Boba_Fett1138 This is a typical '60's Harryhausen movie, set on a remote island with lots of big creatures on it, who of course got all created by Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion effects, for which he got so famous. It's a movie that got based on a Jules Verne novel, that isn't really his best known one today though. It still is a real fun and adventurous story, that has lots of entertaining moments in it. It has a great and imaginative main premise. Still the movie doesn't always know how to handle it very well and instead the movie decides to repeat itself too often, in an attempt to show off with its Harryhausen creature effects. Also the ending seems quite rushed and out of place, from the moment on that captain Nemo suddenly shows up in the picture.Otherwise, the movie still remains for most part a quite maintaining movie, that is made to look real fun and adventurous. It's definitely made a movie made for pure entertainment and this movie must have really exited some people at the time of its release. Now days it's of course all a bit too dated to watch and we look upon this movies more critical than when it got released for the mainstream audience in the early '60's. It's effects as well as all of its settings are quite dated and cheap looking by todays standards but this of course also has become part of the charm of these type of movies. The acting really isn't much special, including the performance from Herbert Lom. But this also is quite suiting for the genre, which never was about its performances or story but always all about its stunning early effects and its means to bring pure entertainment, that is made all the more spectacular by the great Bernard Herrmann musical score.7/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
Petri Pelkonen It's the time of the American Civil War.Union soldiers escape from a Confederate prison camp in a hot air balloon. They end up on a deserted island where they're surrounded by giant animals and a volcano that's about to erupt.Soon they'e joined by two ladies which makes it all more interesting. And there's somebody hiding there in the island. That's Captain Nemo who has his Nautilus inside a cave.Cy Enfield's Mysterious Island (1961) is based on Jules Verne's novel from 1874.I have read some fantastic books by Verne but have not yet touched this one.The movie looks very good. The special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen was behind the visual effects that are amazing looking from that time's point of view.In the movie Captain Cyrus Harding is played by Michael Craig.Joan Greenwood with her husky voice plays Lady Mary Fairchild.Beth Rogan as Elena Fairchild is beautiful and very attractive in her short buckskin minidress.Michael Callan is Herbert Brown.Gary Merrill plays the role of Gideon Spilitt.Percy Herbert is Sergeant Pencroft.Dan Jackson plays Corporal Neb Nugent. In the role of Captain Nemo we see the magnificent Herbert Lom with a gray hair and beard.Mysterious Island offers many thrilling scenes. We get to see fighting with a giant crab and insect or a bird.Enjoy this magical ride among those creatures on the deserted island.
