Synopsis

The madcap life of eccentric Mame Dennis and her bohemian, intellectual arty clique is disrupted when her deceased brother's 10-year-old son Patrick is entrusted to her care. Rather than bow to convention, Mame introduces the boy to her free-wheeling lifestyle, instilling in him her favorite credo, "Life is a banquet, and most poor sons of bitches are starving to death."

Lucybespro It is a performances centric movie
ChanBot i must have seen a different film!!
WillSushyMedia This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
Lachlan Coulson This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.
perun6 The Rosalind Russell performance of this character was terrific, and I'm sure Angela Lansbury would have been wonderful on screen reprising the role she did so successfully on stage. But, I still think Lucille Ball did a great job as Mame! As for her froggy singing, that's what happens to people's voices when they smoke and drink to enough to have hangovers as the Mame character actually did during the story. OK, maybe she's too old to play Mame, so what??? This isn't a story about rainbows and unicorns, it's a story about a great lady who lived her life to the fullest. I just watched it for the first time, and one thing that popped out was that Beauregard....Burnside lived in Tara, Scarlet O'Hara's home. My opinions aside, did everyone else miss this or is this film so universally reviled that nobody else cares to point out a positive shout out for a southern icon?
Frankster200277 This film should really be classified as a Comedy musical as that's what it is! I died laughing in so many scenes. There was perfect comedic timing by Lucille Ball, Bea Arthur, and Jane Connell. There are many serious parts but I feel that the humor dominates and makes this a lighthearted, funny musical. The songs are great and range from funny and fun to serious. If you like older comedy, definitely see this.
vincentlynch-moonoi I have a different feeling about this film -- I really like it, and can't imagine it being better.BUT, there is one huge problem: Lucille Ball couldn't sing. Period. And this is a musical. However, aside from that, Lucy was the perfect Mame. But again, if you haven't watched the film yet, be prepared for Lucy's terrible singing. But aside from the singing issue, Lucy IS perfect for Mame, and it was nice to see her on the big screen again. There are so many great segments to this movie. Mame excelling at fox hunting, leading to a stunning musical production number of the title song. In fact, the whole segment with Robert Preston is nothing short of charming. Agnes Gooch's pregnancy. The musical number between Mame and Vera demonstrating how they love/hate each other. The segment with the Upsons. The cast is pretty much perfect. Aside from Lucy, Bea Arthur is the perfect Vera. Robert Preston perfect as Beau from Georgia. Bruce Davison great as the older Patrick, although he can't outshine Kirby Furlong as the young Patrick. Jane Connell great as Miss Gooch. And Don Porter as Mr. Upson. So, for what it's worth, I think it's a terrific...except for Lucy's singing.
treeline1 Lucille Ball stars as Mame, an eccentric, avant-garde New Yorker who suddenly becomes the guardian of her orphaned nephew. She opens new vistas for the boy but when the Depression hits, she finds herself a shop clerk. Luckily, one of her first customers is a handsome, wealthy, and single Southern gentleman (Robert Preston).First of all, this is the Worst Movie Ever; not funny bad, but miserably awful in every way. When the story opens, Mame is about 42, but Lucy's 62, looks 72, and sounds 82. Her voice is so low and gravelly, she sounds like Foghorn Leghorn and is about as subtle. When she smiles, she has a frozen leer on her face that makes her look like a mummy, even with the ridiculous soft-focus lens that fools no one. From her first scene, she has no warmth or heart, nothing about her that would make a little boy love her, let alone her hoards of minions.Bea Arthur plays Mame's best friend, but she's made up to look like an ugly man. She and Lucy have no chemistry at all and their witty repartee falls flat. The story moves way too quickly in order to fit in all the songs which are slow and dreary; they could have been saved if Lucy would sing, but she can't. Mame's wardrobe is stylish and striking, but Lucy seems to be posing like a wax figure in them, rather than actually being a fabulously charismatic woman. Watching this movie just makes one remember how much better Rosalind Russell was in the original, non-musical version.
