Diagonaldi Very well executed
XoWizIama Excellent adaptation.
TrueHello Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
Taraparain Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.
pasavela Bottom line wherever they come from women are just people and as such basically just want a better life.In the film I think Lichi was equally exploited by Adrian and Andrew. Placed in her situation I think she responded as well as can be expected. Furthermore I didn't see her as conniving, or even vindictive. I think she just wanted a better life and was willing to do her best to make that happen with whomever. Most of all I think this film has educational value insomuch as it brings an awareness to a situation that is sadly not uncommon. See the movie "Human Traffickers" it similarly brings much needed awareness to a situation that exploits women.
breayle-1 When I first saw this on Encore the other day I thought the guy making this "documentary" was a sick dude! What type of man does this sort of thing, WOW! And the ending is just amazing! This is a great film, all the characters in it are believable (and unbelievable!) and work well all together in their big frightening tangled web that they weave! And as for this movie mocking poor little Asian girls in the US... I'd have to disagree. If you think that all Asian immigrant girls come to the States to marry someone to become a citizen then perhaps YOUR the one with the problem. After all, my very own personal Mail Order husband claims that I'm the best wife he's ever married, and plans to stay with me at the very least till his green card clears. And he's Russian, not Asian. Well he's half Japanese and Russian, but he lived in Russia. Anyways, back to the point... wait... did I have a point?PS> All that extra stuff at the end was just added so I can make the minimum post requirements!
forevertaboo I don't ever give commentary on movies here on IMDb, but the comments I read from here for this movie made me so mad, I had to make one myself.Because of this movie's trickery and superb acting skills, I began believing it was a documentary, as well as did my friends. And being Asian myself, I have much to say (all negative) about how mail-order brides degrade women everywhere. BUT, this movie has put all of my opinions out there perfectly in one little neat package. It shows the ridiculousness of the subject, the pros and the cons, and finally that this was JUST a movie and NOT to be taken seriously. I firmly believed in the beginning that it was just a movie. However, several minutes into the movie, my doubts began. BUT, once the movie ended, with the blooper between Adrian and Lichi, it once again revealed YET another twist. Movies portrayed that intricately deserve so much more than harsh criticisms about how horrible the subject is. War is a horrible subject, yet Hollywood releases at least five every year. All I have to say is, the idea of mail-order brides is sickening because we know so little of it... but you have to look at it from ALL perspectives. And this movie shows JUST THAT. Five out of five stars.
danielgpinto I can't believe people this this movie was a real documentary.I am an ex-pat living in Hong Kong, so I was really curious when I saw this DVD in the shop. Within 10 minutes of watching it, I was confused. This chick is supposed to be from Burma. Let me tell you now, Burmese is not Chinese. She opens speaking Mandarin.....which I thought was quite strange.....then later she spoke the Cantonese dialect, which is only used in Hong Hong and the Canton province's in China (notably Guanzhou). This didn't seem right....after looking it up IMDb, I realized that she is actually Hong Kong Chinese. Not only that, she is a famous actress in Hong Kong, more recently playing a lead role in Memoirs of a Geisha. They could of at least portrayed her as Chinese, and not Burmese. And the fact that her dialect changed from Mandarin to Cantonese, made it obvious that this was fake. The producers really should have done their homework. But then again, I guess most people in the Western world wouldn't know this.Just a little insight that I thought you all would like to know.
