Linbeymusol Wonderful character development!
Tedfoldol everything you have heard about this movie is true.
Allison Davies The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Mathilde the Guild Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
museumofdave What a sly, subversive film this is, as director Ratanaruang mixes several genres, adding his own quiet powers of observation to upend the viewer's expectations! The first thing that should be said is that very little is spelled out for the viewer, so that if the viewer comes to the film expecting a conventional meet-cute love story, or a Yakuza shoot-out, or a film with a conventional beginning, middle and end--well, look for something else--you're with the wrong movie. As it follows an obsessive neat-freak about to commit suicide to his introduction to the girl he will come to love in spite of the fact she's an unbelievably messy housekeeper with a checkered past, the film veers from oddly comic scenes of death to quietly contemplative meditations while decisions are being made. This is a complex film with gorgeously lush photography and naturalistic acting, but if you want easy entertainment--this ain't it--the director makes the viewer work as time and space are frequently mixed. This film is an entertaining challenge; if you like puzzles, you'll likely be in movie heaven!
Chrysanthepop 'Last Life in the Universe' works both as a mood piece and a dark romantic comedy. The dry humour, silence, washed out colours, visuals and music help set the atmosphere which is gloomy and depressing but has a sense of humour. The Kenji (Tadanobu Asano) and Noi (Sinitta Boonyasak) unconventional love story comes across beautifully on screen. There are no saccharine moments where the boy and girl profess their love to one another. It is displayed with marvelous subtlety. Both Asano and Boonyasak act wonderfully. They convey a lot through non-verbal expressions. Yet it is director Pan-Ek Ratanaruang who deserves most credit. The way he has weaved everything together using minimum amounts of the essential ingredients of film-making only prove that less is more (at least in this case). The end is open to interpretation but given the 'depressing' themes the movie brings forth, it finishes on a note of hope for the two protagonists.
JesusChristTheSecond I am a fan of European and Asian films. I taped this movie on my video to enjoy it during my day off. I was excited and maybe expecting a lot out of it. But, it turn out to be 2 hours of dullness. It starts and the expectations are high. It gives you a pick when the main character experience a murder in his on house and makes another one tho save his life. This is the part where I was expecting the character to change dramatically. The plot up to that point is great, but then the character can not remain the same and start a "love" story! The character should have start feeling things like guilt maybe or whatever to change his view of things, his philosophy of the world, his ego and so on.The movie had great potential and manage to spoil it by showing us the last "love" in the universe. Even this could have been done in a better way. How the hell someone murder and then goes on with his life and get happy because he gets a new "old car" and on and on...Unfortunately the movie is 3 out of 10 And my afternoon was destroyed...
vailsy i really didn't like the sound in this movie at all. it drew far too much attention to itself and was a distraction for mefor example, noi closes her house up before heading off to japan.. we don't hear the gate closing at all but we do hear her locking it. why? the car rarely makes a noise and instead we hear the gentle sound of the waves. a nice idea, but overdone overall i found the sound in this movie to be inconsistent and confusing. very much like the movie as a whole before you rush out to see or buy this movie, bear in mind that the IMDb rating here is based on around just 40 or so reviews currently (07')
