Claysaba Excellent, Without a doubt!!
Arianna Moses Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Anoushka Slater While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Guillelmina The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
MarieGabrielle Peter Riegert has done a very good work here, translating the above mentioned short story into a film. The ensemble of actors fit well, and portray a realistic story of the reality, disappointments, and comedy of everyday life.Eli Wallach is excellent as Riegert's cantankerous, malcontent father, who finally admits he hated his job, did everything "right" but regrets never having lived.Eric Bogosian is the rabbi, whose dark sarcasm just works, and it is particularly amusing when he takes Riegert to the dog track, to discuss funeral arrangements.Isabella Rosselini is believable as Riegert's disappointed wife, there are a few scenes with Harris Yulin, as Riegert's employer. If you need an intelligent comedy that is somehow uplifting, watch this film. You will truly enjoy it. 9/10.
ethanherschenfeld the film is excellent. based on a great book of short stories "bad jews and other stories" which i read and enjoyed in 2003. the film combines elements from two of those short stories into a compelling drama which is both really really funny, and poignant. if you have a father, or a daughter, or a wife, or a job, it will resonate with you. if you have none of the above, it will still resonate with you. great characters and performances by a top notch cast. and a hilarious Gregory Peck bit. bogosian is maybe the best rabbi on film since the frisco kid. the only reason i don't give it a 10 is because that rating is reserved for Xanadu and Xanadu alone.
katecunning This was an affecting film with a tremendous cast about the "sandwich" generation stuck between ailing parents and rebellious children, still struggling to make a living (darkly comical shades of "Death of a Salesman") in the cut-throat world of business in modern America. No Golden Parachutes protect the average worker in this social Darwinian world. I've been a fan of Peter Riegert for a very long time & I'm delighted to see him expanding his significant talents into directing. The film's dialog is wonderful and the challenges and failures of middle age will resonate with the adult audience so long ignored by Hollywood films. There were many wonderful performances, but Eric Bogosian's performance as a maverick rabbi was an especial delight.
lokin-1 I saw this movie with my husband and several friends. We all agreed that it was a very enjoyable, entertaining movie containing moments of laughter, sadness, and realistic situations in most of the scenes. Some of the scenes were extremely funny, and some of them were very touching with moments that are universally related to parents who are ill or dying. Eil Wallach was wonderful as the ailing father. His son finally realizes the full value of his father late in the movie. Rita Moreno played a small, yet lovely part in the movie. Isabella Rossellini played an understated part (but better this way than overstated!) Peter Riegert was wonderful in this part. He played it sympathetically in his relationships with his wife, daughter, father and realistically with his employer. I would highly recommend this movie for an enjoyable evening at the movies. It should have been picked up quickly by distributors, but that's another story!!
