SoftInloveRox Horrible, fascist and poorly acted
Listonixio Fresh and Exciting
Allison Davies The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Francene Odetta It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
BigApplePi I read a few reviews but didn't see much if anything about how the life of the detective parallels that of the actor in question. I will skip rating the actors and the story telling because they have already been covered. What interests me is the mystery of George Reeves death is as much an interest of the detective as it is for us ... perhaps more so. The detective, Simo, must know his profession and life is a low level version of Reeves. He wants to know what happened because it will tell him how his own life should be carried out.Take a look at the parallel happenings ... the uncertain loves, the mob threats and finally the unavoidable depression of a failed vocation. I will have to see this film again to see how this interpretation plays out.
Python Hyena Hollywoodland (2006): Dir: Allen Coulter / Cast: Adrien Brody, Ben Affleck, Diane Lane, Robin Tunney, Bob Hoskins: Intriguing mystery noir film about Hollywood corruption. It regards the investigation of the George Reeves death in 1959 where the Superman actor apparently committed suicide but a private investigator argues in favor of murder once the victim's mother hires him for the case. Director Allen Coulter doesn't solve the case but supplies several possible assumptions and suspects. This film isn't about answers as it is about the unsatisfactory run of fame of George Reeves. Adrien Brody is superb as the investigator out for recognition yet drawn into a world of deceit that even affects his son who mourns the death of the man of steel. Ben Affleck plays Reeves who despises the Superman gig and yearns for greater opportunities. He finds temporary satisfaction in the form of two women who leaves scars. Diane Lane plays the wife of a studio head who is having an affair with Reeves but once she appears to be ageing he detatches from her. Robin Tunney plays Reeves's mistresses whom is a suspect in the case but is seen more mysterious. Bob Hoskins seems right for this material after headlining Who Framed Roger Rabbit? This contains a similar period placing him as a potential suspect. The film is given a beautiful noir appeal with undercurrent Hollywood corruption and washouts. Score: 10 / 10
SnoopyStyle It's 1959 and George Reeves (Ben Affleck) best known as TV Superman is found shot dead in a house full of people. The police rules it a suicide. Questionable private investigator Louis Simo (Adrien Brody) is hired by Helen Bessolo to investigate the death of her son Reeves. As he digs into the case, the show flashes back to Reeves' time in Hollywood starting as a nobody trying to get his foot in the door. He has an affair with Toni Mannix (Diane Lane) who he doesn't know at first that she is actually the wife of a MGM studio head Eddie Mannix (Bob Hoskins). The movie is a little slow and a little long relishing in the noirish hard-boiled style. Allen Coulter is a TV director and that may be why the movie moves more slowly. It doesn't quite have the urgency. Adrien Brody's slow brooding mannerisms only accentuate the pacing. I like the era and the style. I could do with a quicker pace. Ben Affleck fits this character better than his other nice guy roles. He's a little dark and a little complicated. It signals a change in Affleck's career path for the better. The style is there but the pacing is lacking.
FilmBuff1994 Hollywoodland is a good movie with a well developed storyline and a talented cast. The movie isn't extremely exciting or thrilling, but it is an interesting story,I much preferred the parts that were a biography of George Reeves life over the investigation scenes, the detective scenes were quite slow but Reeves life story was fast paced and very interesting.Ben Affleck did a great job as George Reeves on this film,a lot of people complain about him as an actor, but I think he's really good and I don't feel like he's "just acting",I truly believed he was Reeves, his personality was nothing like the way you would see Affleck on interviews.I wasn't very happy with the ending of the film, although I understood why they did it,it still annoyed me.Hollywoodland can be very slow, but it's still quite enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good biography film or drama. A private eye investigates the suspicious death of Superman actor George Reeves in 1950s LA.Best Performance: Ben Affleck Worst Performance: Lois Smith
