ShangLuda Admirable film.
Sexyloutak Absolutely the worst movie.
Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
Alyssa Black (Aly200) Halle Berry and Robert Downey, Jr. helm this terrifying supernatural thriller about a formerly respected prison psychiatrist who is accused of the horrific murder of her husband (Charles S. Dutton) and must try to convince her former colleague (Downey, Jr.) she is innocent. The acting from both Berry and Downey, Jr. are one of their most underrated performances. Berry plays Dr. Miranda with a slightly fragile, but strong-willed femininity that does not lower her to a stereotypical horror movie female. The actress equally exudes a confidence and determination that keeps Miranda as a character to root for. Berry's chemistry with co-star Downey, Jr. is palpable as his smug, but compassionate fellow psychiatrist contrasts with the straight- woman that Miranda is. However Downey, Jr. plays the character of Wayne as an intelligent man who at first is skeptical of his former colleague's claims of innocence, but as occurrences grow stranger throughout the narrative Wayne begins to believe that Miranda might not be as insane as he and others had thought. The film's story does start out exciting enough, but does delve into some horror clichés throughout the narrative such as Miranda seeing something that no one else does, eerie noises, the fellow mental patient (a well-cast Penelope Cruz in a minor role) who convinces the heroine that she is not so crazy and the "Am I insane or not?" cliché. However the film does keep the suspense coming at crucial points such as Miranda's escape from her former employment facility, her vision of what happened the night her husband was slain (the fact of whether she really did or not still bothers me after the ending) and a bit of a cliché-driven ending where the protagonists (Miranda with some help from Wayne) confront the bad guy. Still worth a watch for a good fright
gavin6942 A repressed female psychiatrist (Halle Berry) wakes up as a patient in the asylum where she worked, with no memory of why she is there or what she has done. How do you put John Carroll Lynch and Robert Downey in a movie and have it be bad? That is a real challenge. Of course, adding Halle Berry probably is the top reason this movie is garbage, but she is not the only one to blame. The plot is messed up and the editing is pretty ridiculous.Others have compared this to "Sixth Sense" and other films like that. Certainly "Shutter Island" seems appropriate. Both of those are worlds ahead of this one. I was just so not interested in this, at all, and few people love horror and thrillers more than I do.
SnoopyStyle Dr. Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) is a psychiatrist who works in a prison mental institution. Her husband Dr. Douglas Grey (Charles S. Dutton) is the chief. Her patient Chloe Sava (Penélope Cruz) is claiming that she is being raped by the devil in her cell. Pete Graham (Robert Downey Jr.) is another doctor in the department. One stormy night, Miranda almost runs into a girl on the bridge who turns into flames. She wakes up as an inmate in the penitentiary. Dr. Grey tells her that she's been there for 3 days, and she killed her husband. It's all mood and no thrills. It's a dark atmospheric movie. It's not really compelling after so much dark moody nothing scenes. It gets very boring. There are long scenes of slow moving uncut sequences. It just grinds on and on and on. I didn't care even when the movie reveals something. Just because the movie shows bad ugly things. It doesn't make it scary.
Jaque (ScottBang) BIG SPOILERS: "Gothika" is a very strange movie to say the least. The supernatural plot itself seemed awfully convenient and even contrived when it needed to be. Why didn't the ghost just haunt and possess the rapist and have him kill Halle's husband and then kill himself? Why drag Halle into this? Raping and killing since they were 15 years old? How did this tubby Psycho land a beautiful and intelligent psychologist like Halle as a wife? Why didn't Penelope's character just tell her who the rapist was? Why all the cryptic games if the rapist was real and not a ghost? Why did the ghost of the dead victim cut up and beat the crap out of Halle if she wanted her help? The answer to all these questions is… because they had to in order to fit the plot. I hate movies that unfold in this manner. You can almost physically see where the screenwriter had good ideas but struggled to connect them into a coherent story. Instead of a complete and an intelligent story, we have to watch the adaptation of a sloppy script and are forced to put up with inconsistencies as the movie plays connect the dots. Still, Halle gives a good performance and, despite the absurdity, I found myself caught up in the movie. So, one star for each of those factors but nothing more.
