Evengyny Thanks for the memories!
Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Plustown A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
filippaberry84 I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Ffolkes-3 "Flawless" isn't your typical heist movie. There's much more to it than pure entertaiment. This is mainly due to leading characters' psychological background which is very well captured by Demi Moore and Michael Caine.Moore's Laura, a woman who has already achieved a lot in a male-dominant 1960s society, is well aware that even though she works more than her male colleagues, she will always be at a disadvantage. Caine's Hobbs, an elderly jaintor, one of those people whose presence always meets with indifference, has that kind of common man's sensitivity that makes him a far more better human being than other people. He sees the world around him in a much wider perspective. In fact, his motto is that 'it's a remarkable world out there...'... and many people don't realise that. A very subdued performance by Caine makes Hobbs a truly moving character.Michael Radford, a very talented director, somehow overlooked in the last decade, is definitely an actor's director. "Flawless" also proves his great sense of restraint. The usually presented as a very glamorous decade, the 1960s in "Flawless" are very stylish but not overly "shiny". Verdict: if you want something more than just a 'Catch me if you can' story, you'll love it.
robert-temple-1 This is an intriguing and thoughtful film. Although it is about a huge diamond robbery, it is fortunately not a traditional 'heist film'. I hate most heist films. The lead roles are played by Michael Caine and Demi Moore. Michael Caine plays Michael Caine, surprise surprise. But that is OK, because that is more or less who the character is meant to be. The year is 1960. Moore plays a sleek, hyper-tense female business executive whose job is threatened, and who is struggling to survive at all in a world of sneering male chauvinist pigs. She is the only woman ever to rise to managerial rank in a London diamond company which controls all the South African diamond supply and runs the international cartel for diamonds. Caine has spent 19 years working, or one should say posing, as a janitor there, plotting and planning his big robbery. But what are his real motives? The film hinges on this, and the unexpected revelations of the origins of the proposed heist, which go back 19 years. Since Caine reads all the discarded memos and correspondence thrown into the waste baskets in all the offices, he knows what everyone is doing, saying, and thinking within the firm. (Remember, this is 1960, and everything is on paper.) Caine approaches Moore because he knows of her grievances, and persuades her to steal the codes of the giant safe containing all the company's diamonds. She eventually steals them from the home of the company's chairman, played very well, as usual, by the ever-reliable supporting actor Joss Ackland, veteran of 189 films. The plot moves on and develops some surprises, some very big surprises in fact. The film is intense, gripping, and entertaining. It was very well directed by Michael Radford, best known for Orwell's NINETEEN EIGHT-FOUR (1984), WHITE MISCHIEF (1987), and the sleeper hit IL POSTINO (1994). (On the subject of IL POSTINO, I have to say that although it was a lovely film, its depiction of the poet Pablo Neruda by the charming and cuddly French actor Philippe Noiret was wildly at variance with the truth. I met Neruda in 1966, and he was a vain, arrogant, haughty and egocentric poseur, the very opposite of the gentle softie portrayed by Noiret.) In this film, Demi Moore continues to massage us with her throaty voice and keeps 'looking good', despite having moved on into middle age. She has that something.
cattrelc Demi could act even just a little bit! To be fair, it wasn't totally her fault this time around. I think that her character might have been written by someone in the 1950's who really had no idea what women are/were like. However, her on screen actions would have been better suited to a bit part and not the central female lead of an otherwise wonderful heist movie. My wife says that she figured out where the diamonds went about 15 minutes before I did but in reality I had actually stopped caring about the nature of the heist and was continually shaking my head in disbelief @ the slapstick vocal antics of the dizzy dame in the varying shades of form fitting attire! I could forgive a slip or two from someone in her position due to shock or something but she basically takes out a bullhorn @ every opportunity and shouts major plot points and personal concerns near the people who are supposed to be investigating the crime. Its really unfortunate that a better actress or a better writer for women (or both) couldn't be brought into the project because I think it could almost have lived up to its name then. As is, its still a better watch than a lot of the shiny schlock out there. At least it has the always wonderful Michael Caine!
paloma54 Demi Moore and a host of British worthies are great in this psychological bank/heist/thriller. I may be the only person in the world who is not so keen on Michael Caine. It seems to me he has been playing essentially the role of Michael Caine for an entire lifetime. He muffles his words, so I missed a lot of his dialog, and found this very unsatisfying, and his personal "charm" was unable to overcome it. The first 45 minutes of the movie drags a bit, but I found myself much more involved in the plot after that. There are interesting plot twists, even though at times I was straining to distinguish exactly who was in among the company of diamond and insurance company executives. Overall, an enjoyable film, if you have a bit of patience.
