Lollivan It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
mharah It's all right to not like a movie. But don't get not liking it mixed up with not getting it. "Fighting" is not about fighting. It's about the mentality and culpability of a young drifter - Shawn - who stumbles into success at being a street fighter. He's a nice young man who never set out to be a fighter... or much of anything else, for that matter. He gets involved with Harvey, a second-rate street hustler who sees Shawn's potential as a street fighter and pimps the kid out for money. Shawn realizes he's being exploited and doesn't mind. That's nothing amazing. It happens every day. The acting is just fine. These aren't refined people; they are street people. The actors portrayed that. While this isn't an award-winning film, it did fulfill its mission. For viewers who expected something else, too bad. Get over it, and evaluate what was presented, not what you psyched yourself up for.
Mariam I love movies that have any type of martial arts in it... i make it a point to try and watch them. This one had great potential... great story-line... a great plot...But OMG, the cast just showed how desperate these people are that hire them... Channum couldn't act to save his life... he was all over the place... so was 'Zulay'... there emotions, the body language and what they were saying were doing 3 very different things...Good actors get the lines and either do them justice or if it is poorly written they rearrange and make it so that it 'fits'... I was so disappointed... my 8 year old who has never acted in his life could do a better job!... it was hideous and cringing!Just because the actors are 'buff' and good looking DOESN'T necessarily mean they can ACT!Most movies like these are predictable but it is the good acting and great lines that makes the movie exciting to watch, this did none of that!If I could i would give it minus infinity.
loogenhausen Featuring probably the most generic title of 2009, Fighting has a few of the right ingredients but too many of the wrong ones. Channing Tatum's mush-mouthed "aw shucks" gentle half-giant performance is too annoying to ignore and he comes off a lot like John Cena's dumber brother. I have no idea what Terrence Howard is doing in here, but as usual he's the only one that turns in a good performance. It's nice to see The Guz in another film, but he's hardly in it enough to matter. The female lead is so cardboard and generically pretty that you can't even try to care about her. The fights, which are what this movie is supposed to be about, are MTV-ified and feel even more staged than a bad WCW match. There are too many plot holes that stare you right in the face and everyone seems to conveniently know each other just a little too well to conveniently serve the dull script. I'm not sure if it's Dito Montiel's fault or not, since he's responsible for the superior in every way A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints. I'm sure teeny boppers are clamoring to see a shirtless Tatum but anyone else looking for a memorable movie about underground fighting would be better off watching Gladiator (with Cuba Gooding not Russell Crowe) or Fight Club.
pc95 It took Hollywood awhile to dust off the old fighting genre. Here we have 'Fighting", more or less an updated version of Van Damme's Lionheart thankfully with a little more realistically choreographed fighting. There's a few details and character development which has some thought worked into it, but unfortunately it doesn't make up for horribly clichéd romance and painful associated dialog to follow. Terrence Howard does the best he can with his hustler character, but there's not much of interest going on. The fight scenes are better than a lot other movies, but they cant carry the movie alone. The "thugs" and investors are cookie-cutter. There are worse movies out there, but this certainly isn't a good movie anyway you cut it.
