Afouotos Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
Chirphymium It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
Lidia Draper Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
Deanna There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
Jesper Brun Oh my, what a watch! This is definitely not for everyone who is either very fond of cats or just expecting animation to be for kids. It is littered with disturbing images, explicit sexual content and complex and harsh themes from reality. The animation is terrific with great detail added to enhance the mood of whatever it is trying to get across. The effort put into it astounds me, and it could easily have been a Don Bluth project on par with The Secret of Nimh. But that's taking it a little too far, because to be honest it has some flaws which takes down a notch. The character movements were almost always constant, and it was distracting and exhausting to watch at times. It is not ruining the film at all, but made my thoughts wander once in a while. The film is driven by dialogue most of the time, and the voice actors were good, but sometimes the lines seemed like filler and were at times awkward. You may sometimes wonder why they said that particular line, that's how I felt. The discussions they have about the mystery going on is engaging, but can get a little tedious when not much is going on around. But the atmosphere added by the bleakly sounding musical score and the top-notch animation which added the most disturbing nightmare scenes and gory images I have seen yet in an animated movie make this a standout in the world of animation. But watch it at your own risk. You have been warned!
randm-09520 Based on a story from a troubled author, who was in simple needs of money, who came up with an out of the common detective story by staring at his little kittens movements, arose a grown up animation classic. That is my point, this really is a classic, i urge every cineast to view it.Akira, mononoke, bambi just to name three which most people including me would highly recommend, doesn't matter that they aren't entirely for grown ups or rated r, i name them just to give you an idea in which league felidae really is(to my mind of course). It is a German animation in German and that's a problem. my native language is German and the version is superb, it really is. i don't know of any English version which i could recommend and i really want to recommend one. In that case i wouldn't mind, because of the wider audience just to strengthen the chance that someone will be inspired by it.Do not inform you about the movie beforehand, which is kinda dumb stating in a review for a movie on a site where you get tons of information about movies. but i think you get that, this is best viewed tabula rasa.Things you can and probably should know are the following, if you liked psycho, silence of the lambs, seven or i saw the devil, which i consider to be of the same mood and you are interested in animation for grown ups, watch felidae and perhaps you will get an out of the common idea someday by yourself. who knows. But you will be gripped and entertained by an original story from a world just some feet beneath us.;)The bold story choice, the pacing, the mood and the genre breaking inaccessibility is what makes felidae classic. Not for every one, not for kids but a great miss for every real cinephil and grown up animation lover.
Horst in Translation (filmreviews@web.de) "Felidae" is (as you may have guessed from its title) a film centered around cats, but it's not an animated film for children as it is basically a crime thriller with some similarities to the likes of "Watership Down". It's bloody, we see dead cats, a religious cult, there's talk about colon cancer and also a massive fire almost at the end. The movie is from over 20 years ago and features quite some great names in the cast. Tukur, Adorf, Brandauer, Schneider and Ochsenknecht should be known to those with an interest in German cinema. And it also includes Wolfgang Hess, the German voice of Bud Spencer. Always a joy for me to listen to, especially as the cat that he voiced also had Spencer's physical appearance, not his kindheartedness though. The male cat Francis moves into a new home with his owner (or I should say "tin opener") and quickly acts as a detective when several cats (in heat) in the neighborhood get brutally murdered. It gets personal when Felicitas is killed right after he met her. All the cats reminded me really of humans at times, not only because they were speaking, but also because of the characterizations and character traits they possessed. Also when they get into comparing the victims' races, it is almost like a real crime movie with human actors. It's a pretty short movie, runs only for 75 minutes without closing credits. The novel it is based on and the script come from Akif Pirinçci ("The Door") and as I saw him in a recent talk show, the final developments made me think quite a bit in terms of the main antagonist cat obviously possessing a Nazi-like attitude. The film's director is Michael Schaack. You may have heard about his "Werner" movie work or "The Little A**hole", which also features Helge Schneider. All in all, I did enjoy this film. The animation is fine and I also liked how the cats were randomly scratching their furs while talking. Also the crows representing danger were nicely included. However, I have to say there are a couple flaws too mostly near the end. I was a bit underwhelmed by the motive and the solution to the murders, but it's not so bad that it destroys everything before. I did not like the final quote about animals and humans coexisting in peace as this is really not what this film is about. It's about cats coexisting in peace with other cats, or humans with humans if you see it metaphorically. And how did out hero manage to kill the main antagonist and all the other victims before were not able to do so? Everything before that is good though (especially the tension as you did not know if cats or humans were the killers) and that's why I recommend watching this film.
Claudandus Pascal I'm surprised that this film isn't very well known and that its mean score here is a mere 7.1 (which isn't that bad, but isn't that good either). This movie is often compared to The Plague Dogs (Mean score: 7.7), as they both are animated films with a lot of gore and language, but if you ask me, The Plague Dogs pales in comparison to Felidae. The Plague Dogs has better animation, but Felidae has so much more than that: Clever characters, unpredictable plot, witty humor, a developed cat culture, metaphors for human society, superb voice acting, and scientific references. The only danger I see with it is that some kid may want to see it since it's animated and has cats, and since it has no rating, the parents won't know it's not for kids. It would have PG-13 or R rating if it was rated. Be warned: It has frequent mild language (frick, hell, a**, a**hole, d***, god d***), occasional strong language (b******, s***, bulls***, s***head),some sexual references and innuendo, brief cat sex, and a lot of intense cat violence with animated blood and gore (intestines, lungs, and bones).
