Reviews

Moustroll Good movie but grossly overrated
Claysaba Excellent, Without a doubt!!
Hadrina The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
Jenna Walter The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
classicsoncall This appears to be one of those pictures where the reviewers who love and hate the movie both acknowledge that it's generally bad, cinematically speaking. The dialog is trite and the characters are a mess, and the film that's wrapped around them tends to be pretty much one big chase scene. Peter Fonda obviously didn't mind cashing in his chips at the end of his films, as he followed up 1969's "Easy Rider" by going out in a blaze of glory in this one. There's nothing that really sets one up for that moment, so when it happens you're left looking at the screen wondering how and why the film makers treated their characters in such an ignominious way. But then I answer my own question by re-reading what I wrote just a few sentences back and it all becomes much clearer. I guess if hot rods and hot babes are your thing, this movie might pose some interest, but if so, I'd take the advice of Fonda's 'Crazy Larry' and hook up with Robert Mitchum in 1958's "Thunder Road". Now there's a bad boy.
fullbug Smokey and the Bandit just had to be modeled after this movie. Contains all the same elements. Two partners looking to make that one big (illegal) score, a sexy transitory woman along for the ride, a tough sheriff hot on their tail, and a whole lot of crazy driving from the muscle car era.And like the Bandit, this isn't just a car chase movie. It was very well written and produced with an interesting story, excellent cast and character development, and imo, Peter Fonda's best film. Also excellent performances by Susan George and Vic Morrow.Take special note of the superb camera work for all the car chase scenes (very ground breaking). And the light green '69 Dodge Charger is just as eye-catching as the Bandit's Trans Am.This isn't the Shawshank Redemption...but it isn't as mindless as the Duke's of Hazzard either. A classic 70's Drive-In movie that should be on everyone's Watch List.
carbuff Just a great classic '70s car chase movie. This is the kind of movie I grew up on, so I have a weakness for movies from this period. I like that it isn't anywhere near as slick and polished as modern movies, which while generally are more real and compelling visually, often oddly seem to feel less real emotionally than some older movies like this. All of the actors came through except for Peter Fonda, who really is just a terrible actor. He is talentless and no doubt only became an actor because his father Henry Fonda was so famous and successful in this line of work. A real highlight is that if you love cars like I do, the really sweet '69 440 Charger will make you ache some--what a great car. The biggest problem some people will have with this movie is that the protagonists are anti-heroes, frankly true and not particularly likable criminals, and some people won't like that you wind up rooting for them to get away (at least I did).
chris1071 Without doubt this is one of the more enjoyable car chase movies I have seen. The car stunts are fantastic and stand the test of time. It's fair to say that the plot has flaws and the acting is a little wooden in places, but for all that it comes across as a fun movie. On a wet Wednesday evening it is truly a great film to watch with your mates whilst having a few beers. This has better acting than 'Gone in 60 seconds(1974) and a better car chase than 'Bullitt (1968). This film is a time waster in the best possible way. If you haven't seen it then I would encourage you to go out and buy it.The film's ending certainly caught me by surprise and in many ways is the best way to conclude this film.
