Brigid O Sullivan (wisewebwoman) But they can't save this movie from a poorly thought through script and its many plot holes. The border crossing was a joke with a cavity search for drugs and then followed in quick succession by a release into Canada. And then a back track back to the US to pick up Dukakis and go through the border again in the same truck? Hello? And the granddaughter not realizing her granny and her partner of 31 years are not lesbians? Too much slapstick, and the ending had to end in a punishment for the lesbian theme. Always that same old cliché at the end of such movies. Most disappointing as the set up of the male stripper and the old couple settling down together had far more appeal.Too bad, it started really, really well and finished with such a whimper.4 out of 10.
survsylvania Olympia Dukakis is a beautiful old lady, miscast in this part. She delivers lines one would expect to hear from Alex of Orange is the New Black, and it just doesn't work for her -- or for this old lady writing this review. Now that same-sex marriage is the law of virtually all of the land in North America, even down here in Old Virginny, the movie does feel a bit dated. The fact that there is no resolution for Prentice in his relationship to his parents is disappointing. The writer seems to take the easy way out rather than seeing the situation to its probably more interesting ending than this treatment gives it. The movie at times descends to farce, though it has some touching moments. Prentice and Dot give excellent performances despite the weak, undeveloped script and immature directing. The cinematography in Maine and Nova Scotia are incredibly beautiful. I would not recommend this movie despite the three leads' terrific acting.
kindtxgal I would have liked to give this film a higher rating but contrary to other reviewers, I do not believe that one has to be immersed in excessive profanity and garbage language to "get into" a characterization.Hundreds of early movies have successfully and vividly portrayed "bullish" characters without having to adopt garbage can lingo to create their character as more "believable". Frankly, I find excessive garbage can language distracting and used to "fill time" which could be better used to tell the story more thoroughly.I did like the story, however, just got tired REAL FAST of Dukakis's bad dialog. Again, when an actor has to rely on garbage for language to create their character, something is badly lacking in their acting abilities.I loved Brenda Fricker's character however, as well as the male stripper wanna be -- great characters and placed against Dukakis's over the top, offensive yuck, it was a welcome relief.Tender, fantastic story of what some may consider an unconventional love. THAT at least survives throughout all the bad language miraculously.
michaelb84 I just watched this movie and really liked it. Cloudburst is the story of two lesbians who have been together for 31 years. After Dotty falls out of bed when her partner teases her with a vibrator, her granddaughter decides that she needs to be placed in a nursing home. Stella refuses to allow her to do this so Molly, the granddaughter, tricks Dotty into signing over power of attorney to her and then places her in the home.Stella busts her out and the two flee to Canada in order to get married, along the way picking up Pretince, a young dancer from New York who is traveling to see his sick mother. The movie is often touching, and the best scenes were generally the parts where Dotty and Stella were just being a typical old couple, either bickering or showing charming displays of affection (often both at the same time). The humorous scenes often feel unnecessary and occasionally bring the movie down from it's full potential. With that said I did laugh at many of them, especially a hilarious scene where Stella and Pretince cross the Canadian border and are stopped by security. Others weren't as good, for example a scene where Dotty accidentally gets in bed with a naked guy.All in all it is a great movie and addresses the lives of lesbian seniors who are often ignored by the generally youth-centered LGBT entertainment industry.
