Glucedee It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.
TaryBiggBall It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
OneEightNine Media Choke is a mildly entertaining film about a sex addicted trying to find himself while dealing with his mother's journey towards death. The problem with this movie is that it does not know what it wants to be. It tries too hard to be a drama with a twist of hard humour but doesn't deliver. If they tried it the other way around, making it a dark comedy with a bit of drama, then it could have worked. The story, and movie just try too hard to be as hip as Fight Club, this film is based on a book from the same author as Fight Club; I learned that during the end credits. I'm also just learning that Clark Gregg directed this film and this was his first time directing and I'm guessing he tried too hard to stay faithful to the novel. Whatever the case, the movie doesn't work. It is boring at times and drags on. It has no real conclusion, even though the characters do show growth during each of their journeys. I'm just giving this film a 6 out of 10 because the story itself isn't bad, just the execution ultimately ends up sinking the film.
Milad Soleimani for the love of god if you read the book do not watch this piece of garbage. the film turned a book that make you think and move you with every page to a total disgrace of an art. come on really?! i don't know if the film was based on the book choke by Chuck Palahniuk or some high school drama stuff. i don't know how chuck was willing to let his book to be butchered like this. the flashbacks to the childhood of Victor was awful. Directing and screen writing simply was simply awful as can get, the parts that was different from the book was the real story the Palahniuk wrote. Casting... oh dear casting. why the heck Beth was this beautiful and why Victor was this lame. and the ending was match to the entire film. some lousy make out scene instead of what was in the book. oh dear god i feel so bad for watching this. i have to read the book again to wash this away from my mind! i have to say it again do not watch the movie if you read the book, and if you haven't read the book read it instead of watching this!!!
christopher-underwood Good solid black comedy from actor/director, Clark Gregg. I'm assuming that the great performances in difficult territory are, at least in part, due to the director's acting background. I have not read this Palahnuk book, but shall now for I am surprised to find myself in agreement with others who reckon this could have been longer. 90 minutes is usually fine for me but here there was so much going on in so many different ways and all made so watchable by the sly and wicked humour that runs throughout. Angelica Huston gives a marvellous central performance whilst Sam Rockwell and Brad Henke just perfect. It is a vitally good performance too from Kelly Macdonald and the final twist intriguing. I've put of seeing this because of the whole sex addict business and the title! As it turns out the choking scenes are more or less played for laughs as are the sex clinic ones. By the end we are wishing this would go even deeper and further, but then I guess the book does and that this is at least a good stab at conveying the essential qualities. The very decent script certainly comes across as believably Palahnuk. Good film.
ajs-10 This film is based on a novel by Chuck Palahniuk, who also wrote the rather excellent Fight Club (1999). Combine that with a cast that includes Anjelica Huston and Sam Rockwell and I hope we're onto a winner! So it was with fingers crossed and very little knowledge of the plot, I sat down to watch.Victor Mancini is a sex addict; he goes to group sessions to help with his addiction but only ends up having sex with the woman he's supposed to be sponsoring. He works together with his best friend, Denny, at a Colonial America re-enactment park, the kind of place school kids go to learn about the early settlers. He also is a com-man, faking choking fits in restaurants in order to get money so he can support his mother, Ida, who has dementia and lives in a home. On one of his visits he meets a doctor, Paige Marshall, who thinks she knows a way to help Ida, but it's risky. I really don't want to give too much away, so I'll leave my short plot summary here.A pretty well made film with really good performances from both Sam Rockwell as Victor and Anjelica Huston as Ida J. Mancini. I must also give honourable mentions to Brad William Henke as Denny and Kelly Macdonald as Paige Marshall.A lot of the story is told in flashback, harking back to when Victor was a boy on the run with Ida. A really quirky film with all the odd twists you'd expect from the writer of Fight Club. Although it's far from prefect I enjoyed this one very much, and that's not just because of the nudity and sex scenes. Over all, not perfect, enjoyable with a few laughs: Recommended. My score: 6.8/10
