Griff Lees Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
jonnymills This is a pretty shoddy outing from all concerned, and probably something that very few of the protagonists in front of and behind the camera will ever want to highlight on their CV. I would say it was a shockingly bad film but there's no shock. I've been lent the DVD by a friend and it's been sat next to the TV for a couple of years, so low were my expectations, but in the end one Saturday afternoon I managed to sit through it all, hence a slightly generous 4/10. It was less bad than I thought! All it is missing really is a storyline and a grain of originality, and it's about as "real" and "gritty" as a royal wedding, but if you're here for oiled male physiques, violence, MTV style sex and drugs (and I'm guessing you are) then it's going to fine. They must have snorted a trainload of coke while making it, but at least I can at last hand back the box to my friend and say "I have watched it".
Jqn_Hgar i don't know why the critics have to be so cruel with multi-talented people like mickey Rourke. Rourke who co-wrote the script of this movie gave one of the most believable performances of his career, on the other hand we got very cool Photography that really reflects the harsh reality of the drug underworld in the US. the film had a great acting ensemble with Adrien Brody, John Enos III, Mathew Powers, Jerry Dean with a cameo from Tupac as the villain and especially Ted Levine who is a scene stealer in this film. besides the script focuses on a lot of things like family friends brotherhood and redemption furthermore the movie has a powerful message for every drug addict in the world. so the conclusion is that this is one of the most realistic crime movies ever made with great photography and performances so anyone who was afraid to watch this film because of the *beep* critics, just give it a try and you won't regret it.
drkgod2002 This is a cult film for Tupac fans because it was one of his last films. However, it is the acting of Mickey Rourke, the ensemble cast, and the sweetest soundtrack, that paints the brightest of pictures. The music from the movie, the acting from, Mark Wahlberg, Adrien Brody, Tupac, and Mickey Rourke make this movie a favorite, even in re-runs on cable. "Salvador, Salvatore, what the hell is the difference?" "Hey Mazaltuff..." best lines! A great movie, before Mickey Rourke went to Patrick Swyaze's and Kenny Roger's plastic surgeon. If you are a fight fan, you can catch a cameo from 80's fighter Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini as a cop. No doubt a connection to Rourke's fighting days. Apparently, Rourke helped write the screen play, and you know, he has a great movie on his hands. Bravo Mickey!
Zando777 I'd like to correct some errors stated by others.First off, this film is not well-done. The plot is virtually nonexistent, and at times it looks like it was created by an adolescent, especially at the ending. It is also not "realistic" at all. It plays like some suburban (or European's) vision of the "mean streets", and has no knowledge of the actual grittier side of life. However, it does have some interesting scenes, from where the friend is banging two chicks in the kitchen of the bar, from the fight scenes, to the Vietnam brother's psycho character. In all, it seems like a series of unconnected vignettes, some of which are interesting to watch. Kind of like a college kid's first attempt at film-making.Rourke is indeed an interesting, though flawed actor, and he stays in good shape for an older guy.
