Acensbart Excellent but underrated film
Frances Chung Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
Maleeha Vincent It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
hartesmith I have never written a movie review before but had to defend this beautiful film from its critics. It certainly is not a film that you can half-watch while cooking dinner as one reviewer did. It is like watching a flower open in slow motion. You have to immerse yourself in its subtlety. Yes, It's confusing at first. Clearly too much so for some people. But I am bored with films that I can predict who did it and why half-way through. If you are pleased to be puzzled, try it. The only thing I didn't like was the sex scene at the end. It wasn't necessary and hard for for it to live up to its billing as the moment when the two actresses realised they were in love. Finally be warned that if you have ever had your heart broken, this film will bring it all back.
ginnyfoos What a wonderful film, both actresses are able to exude the emotions with dialogue and more importantly without dialogue, but with subtlety, which is as rare as it is great to watch. The underlying emotions are complex, which makes the film pull you in. The emotions are totally universal and you can connect to them regardless of your personal preferences. Good Premise, good writing, good directing and great casting and acting. I'm dying to know what happens after the end of the film, which makes it a 10. The only detraction at all is the lack of background with Mal...there was a story there, but it was a missed opportunity....so a 9
JD JD (lunatickid) Truth be told, I don't normally bother with movie review and stuff (I think this is my first ever, so sorry in advance for my inarticulation), and my normal go-to movies are mostly action, you know the big budget ones (totally waiting for Star Wars and Mission impossible), and I HATE CHICK FLICKS! Not least because I find most of them are stupid, and only good for a Friday drunken night as one can sleep through them and come out sober as they are so boring...But thought I'll watch something steamy and "somehow" I came across this one and thought I could waste an hour watching it on a Thursday night with my gf's away. no probs. girl on girl action, what's not to like.First time, I watched it without paying too much attention. Somewhere in the middle of it, I think it was a stare or a glance, I can't remember, but the intensity of it just... sucked me in. I found myself thinking, "what the fck was that?" (pardon my french) And the performance by Sharon(Zoe) was just beyond mesmerizing to the point of surreal, in a good way(I really struggle to find words to describe), no big tear but a tiny-weeny blink-and-you'll-miss-it tear drop/curl of the lips, a hand gesture, a sombre expression that's trying to suppress all the boiling emotions inside, a stare so intense that you felt like your heart just stopped... I mean, she's on set, she can't go crying and howling and breaking stuff southpaw style. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you really need to watch this movie a few times to pick up all the nuances and subtleties, that the seemingly pointless dialogues by someone in the background turn out to be quite informative, setting the stage for later on. I find myself keep going back to try to find the little bit of clues, a drop of hint, in order to really glimpse into the emotion. I mean, how can you "see" love? How can you examine love? You do it piece by piece, layer by layer, taking in the movie bit by bit, only then will you be able to see the story unfolding. You do the movie an injustice if you only watch it once and decide it's not good, I mean, you can dislike it, but saying it's bad is like you read one chapter of a book and saying it's no good. There are clues that I missed first time, like there is only one camera in the fake set, and that means they only need to choreograph some suggestive movements to get away with it. The little "contact lens" problem in the first scene after the opening credit, which also suggest potentially that Zoe was having some of these flashbacks as well. The first subtle breathing problem Zoe had after she realised Mel was on set, when she was totally not expecting her to turn up at all. The stare that she gave Mel when they first locked eyes and the minuscule teardrop. those flashback when she first sat down seem to hit her with such forces that you can see she's barely holding it together... and for a long term addict trying to stay away from seeking high, only to come face to face with something even more intense and powerful and destructive than drug can be really scary, so perhaps that's why mel freaked out as soon as she sensed a threat (plus thanks to her counsellor/friend edging her to stay away). I suppose each will have his/her own intepretation. Interestingly I find some emotional scenes rather rushed, I find myself gasping for more, then again, maybe that's the point.
musical_lover1986 This movie is so powerful. If you are a person that has been abandoned by someone you loved, who you thought loved you, without explanation, this movie will have an affect on you. Maybe you are the person who did the abandoning. You can identify with one, if not both, of these women. Some have complained about it being slow or no plot. I will say, you must have some depth to you to enjoy this film. It has very quiet moments, but that is where the intensity lies. These quiet moments are where you are going to feel and remember your old wounds. I have watched this movie several times since the first time, and it sticks with me for hours afterwards. Not many movies these days that have that effect. The two lead actresses did such a good job with their roles. I cared so much about Mal & Zoe by the end. If you are able to watch a movie without aliens/disasters/high speed car crashes, please give this movie a chance. xoxo
