Freaktana A Major Disappointment
Stoutor It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
Loui Blair It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
classicsoncall For all you "Snakes on a Plane" fans, here's one that came out a couple years earlier. I haven't seen the original "Anaconda" flick yet, so I can't make a comparison, but I found this one to be fairly entertaining. It's got a great premise with the Perrinia Immortalis business, and because it only shows up once every seven years, you've got the time pressure element for the lively band of adventurers to 'get in and get out', so to speak. Jin-Soon Bill Johnson (Johhny Messner) even said that at one point, so you had to know that was true.Hey, how about that Man vs. Crocodile battle in the middle of the river. If you've seen any of those Jungle Jim movies from the Fifties, you'll appreciate the realism displayed when Wild Bill takes on the angry croc. You couldn't tell if it was made out of rubber or not, and Johnson came out of the water with some blood on his neck. Jungle Jim never even got a scratch! Although the scientific basis for the stuff going on sounded good, most of it was made up, like the bit with the stone spider. There really are such things, named that way because they're almost always found under stones. Not poisonous either, but give it a name like Laba-Laba Batu and it makes you wonder. The only thing that will paralyze you here is watching the picture. My very best takeaway from the movie was when Cole (Eugene Byrd) went ballistic right after Sam (KaDee Strickland) saved him with the Samurai move on one of the title creatures, stating how she 'Lorena Bobbit-ed his ass'. You really had to be around a decade earlier when Mrs. Bobbit made headlines with her own operation with a knife. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you'll have to look it up. It will be worth your trouble.Best talent in the movie - had to be Kong, who didn't even merit a film credit, but he had the slickest moves and the best reaction shots of anyone in the picture. Just watch his facial expressions, you'd swear he was a natural born actor.
gavin6942 A scientific expedition sets out for Borneo to seek a flower called the Blood Orchid, which could grant longer life. Meanwhile, they run afoul of snakes and each other. Some reviews are saying this film is "criminally underrated". Well, those people have no idea what they are talking about. The movie is apparently part of the "Anaconda" franchise, I think (this is not clear), and they could not even muster up a single B-list or even D-list actor to carry the picture. This was rather boring and did little to hold my attention. Maybe I am getting old and cranky, but I have seen enough bad movies in my life. Even SyFy, which makes the worst, has a way of often making them entertaining. This was bad and boring, the ultimate one-two punch of failure.
GL84 Traveling to the Indonesian jungle, a pharmacology team looking for a new life-extending flower finds that the area is home to a massive snake looking to mate and tries to escape from the area alive. This one turned out to be quite decent overall. One of the better features is the rather fun times it has with the snakes throughout here as there's some highly enjoyable moments here. The first encounter in the swamp is quite an enjoyable example of this by using both the suspense of showing it around the group and them thinking it's there before utilizing the action spectacle of the initial attack in front of the remaining survivors, and there's a rather fun finale above a pit loaded with creatures that makes for another great time. The biggest scene though is naturally the attack in the hut which features the chilling stalking scenes of the completely-aware-but-paralyzed victim and the resulting attack before battling the creature in the flaming hut that provides this with some rather exciting scenes as the burning wood collapses around them. Likewise, the adventure segments of the first half do tend to feature some fun as well with a different sort of action throughout the trek into the jungle with the group going along the unfamiliar scenery along with the waterfall ploy and the jungle hikes which is all pretty fun. There's not a whole lot here that doesn't work, but it is pretty sizable in that the film's adventure scenario in the first half really takes its toll on the rest of the film in keeping the snakes off-screen for quite a while. This results in them being utilized so infrequently it really has to rush through its scenes in the final half in such a blur that they feel more like an after-thought to a story about the dangers in the search for a rare flower. Not only that but the fact is the first half is filled with useless scenes that merely exist solely to pad out time with even less time for the creatures, so that the numerous flirting scenes with each other or the monkey hijinks eventually cause this one to drag out even more than what is needed. The last issue is the rather egregious CGI for the snakes which never really evokes any kind of reality on screen which seems natural here and is what keeps this one down somewhat.Rated PG-13: Violence, Language, and animal violence.
votesmall I honestly can't understand why so many people hate this movie. Sure, not very many people die, in Anacondas, all but three were left! But this film spaces out the deaths perfectly to build suspense. Another criticism is that anacondas and tigers aren't native to Borneo. But, if you were to take movies like independence day and Jurassic park for inaccuracies and plot holes, you would have much longer lists than anacondas. This film remains one of my favorite movie purchases, at 3 dollars, along with toy story 2, which I got for only a dollar, because it was missing the bonus disc. But the only reason I really wanted to see this movie was because I saw an ad for dish that advertised it. When I finally saw anaconda several years later, I remembered the ad and rented it. (Actually, it isn't an official sequel.) Although the cover was neat, the tagline and the title were cheesy. However, upon watching, I noticed that the director was Dwight h. Little, the man behind how awesome Halloween 4 was. He made it realistic, but other films, 5 and 6 for example, don't feel like the setting is Illinois. The acting was superb, with a cast playing cringing and squeamish executives, scientists and researchers. The special effects are awesome, and in my opinion, this film is better than anaconda because it is more believable and suspenseful. Okay, in my opinion, there are few creature features worth watching. Jaws, jaws 2, deep blue sea, python, anaconda, abominable, arachnophobia, the Jurassic park trilogy, red water and the carnosaur movies (guilty pleasures) and anacondas: the hunt for the blood orchid.
