Stellead Don't listen to the Hype. It's awful

Baseshment I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Geraldine The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
ttherman-2 In my opinion this is one of the weakest of their films. There are so many other good ones to watch before this. The energy level just kind of seems low here.
gavin6942 Bud Abbott and Lou Costello search for diamonds in Africa, along the way meeting a visually-impaired gunner, a hungry lion, and a tribe of cannibals...I love the baby lion and the grown lion later on. Maybe they were not treated well by the studio (that seems to be common) but it made this all the better. Sure, the gorilla suit and snapping crocodiles are nice, but it is hard to beat a living animal -- lions! This is slightly less witty than their other work, the films with Universal. Some of the cracks are amusing, but it does not seem to be on the same level as "meet Frankenstein" or "meet the Killer". Is this because of the studio or the writing? I have no idea. Fans should still see it... besides, it has Shemp Howard!
sddavis63 Abbott and Costello head off to the jungles of Africa on a search for diamonds in this OK but unspectacular comedy. As the story begins, Costello is drafted by Abbott to impersonate a big-game hunter in order to lead a somewhat shady expedition to Africa. The movie lost a bit of credibility right off the start when Costello's secret obviously came crashing down in his exchange with Clyde Beatty, who was apparently a real big game hunter playing himself. The exchange was funny, but why Beatty wouldn't have simply outed him right then was beyond me. As the movie progresses, there are a series of adventures with various wild animals and with a tribe of cannibals, and the movie finally progresses to its end, as Costello (who seemed beaten) emerges from the adventures apparently fabulously wealthy, while Abbott works as his elevator operator. There were scattered chuckles throughout, and some good physical comedy in places, but for the most part the story was relatively weak and lacking in any sense of flow. This also features a somewhat nonsensical (but what else would you expect) appearance from Shemp Howard, of "Three Stooges" fame. If you need to waste a bit of time, it will do that - and not unpleasantly - but it really is nothing more than a time-waster. 5/10
Michael O'Keefe One of the last features from the enduring comedy team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. Fun here for the entire family. You get everything you expect to see. Abbott conniving straight man to Costello's bumbling dunce. This time Abbott plays Buzz Johnson, a bookstore clerk while Costello is an addled assistant Stanley Livington. This fast-paced, oddball comedy has Livington pretending to be a big game hunter and his buddy Buzz leading a safari through Africa. Hillary Brooke hires the two to find a huge gorilla, while she and some gangster types are really searching for diamonds. The typical situational and slapstick comedy. Rounding out the cast: Clyde Beatty, Frank Buck, Max Baer, Buddy Baer and Joe Besser. You will immediately recognize Shemp Howard of Three Stooges fame. Enjoyable.
