piajax Why have I never heard of this film? This is stupid! I'm sort of a gay film buff right now, since I'm researching a novel - and I only recently came across this gem. I'm laughing out loud at almost every scene - this film is fantastic! In your face and subtle at the same time, attention to detail and a clean write.Why was this not the next Birdcage? This is so hilarious! People are missing out! Fire some executive, goddamn it!Sharp and sensitive writing, and playful directing, inspired acting and very, very good music. Clever, silly, sensual, serious, gross - all my fave ingredients!What went wrong? Somebody should be kicking themselves in the balls for not pushing this film harder.Thank you for creating this beautiful comedy and funny drama! My kind of thing. I offer my creative embrace, but it feels it's too little.

orchidbauDOTcom This is a pretty funny flick... actually, it's a really funny flick.... actually it's an extremely funny flick that isn't easily forgotten. Comedic gay romance films usually fall flat and run too sentimental to be funny and end up making everyone (gay, straight & misc.) uncomfortable. Well, okay, it makes *me* uncomfortable, but I laughed quite comfortably through out this film... mind you, I was lying in bed while I watched it so that accounts for some of the comfort.... but I digress. Craig Chester (who also wrote and directed) and Malcolm Bets star as Adam & Steve who start the film with the greatest, worst first-date in cinematic history - it has to be seen to be believed. It will make your worst date seem charming and the stuff of bad "date movies." Adam & Steve's first encounter is... well, honestly, I can't even describe it, it's just that bizarre... and just that hilarious. This sets the stage for one heck of a funny movie - and it delivers on the promise. It does veer a bit into the sentimental here and there, but wisely never wanders too far from it's raucous core. Interestingly - though it is SO often the case - it's not the leads in this comedy that deliver all the laughs, it's the supporting cast that make you laugh till you want to barf. In this case, the supporting cast is Parker Posey and Chris Kattan as Adam and Steve's best friends respectively. The romance between Posey and Kattan - a couple of extroverted kooks who manage to be both endearing and uproarious - is often funnier than the primary plot line. So "Adam & Steve" veers into the sentimental sometimes - stop being such a darn cynic and watch the darn movie already. I laughed until it became painful and turned back into pleasure again. What more can I tell you? I laughed harder at this than I did at "The Simpsons Movie" which had just as much gay content as "Adam & Steve" now that I think about it. What are you doing still reading this review?? Run, drive, paddle or whatever and get this DVD - now!!

moonspinner55 Craig Chester wrote, directed and stars in this comic love story between two men: a New York City shrink and a klutzy Jewish tour guide who meet and fall in love--but will the recollection of a disastrous date 17 years ago ultimately come between them? Chester is brash and brave and goes out on a limb here, resulting in a gay-comedy better than most. The movie has fun being outré, with ballsy, bitchy humor and an occasional moment of seriousness (a good balance), yet its imagination is stunted, with a fantasy hoedown bit right out of "Jeffrey" and far too many lapses of taste and judgment. Chester's slapstick scenes needed to be reined in, particularly a hopeless sequence with his "cursed" Jewish family and also the poorly-staged gross-out scene 10-minutes in. The film has funny elements and performances (by a most curious cast) and some of it is very sweet. ** from ****

royalhassel-1 I hate to say it, but in this case, the old adage is true: No actor should write and direct himself and throw stones in a glasshouse with the last laugh...eh...whatever.What I'm trying to say is, that as funny as I can sense Craig being naturally at times, as little funny it is when he tries so hard to get his 'cute' lines across.Either Adam or Steve was miscast. Their attraction to each other didn't work, and that is essentially what the entire movie hinges upon. Craig Chester should have cast Steve as a lesser physically attractive man, someone with a big personality, to match Adam more evenly. OR cast Adam with a more attractive actor to match Steve. Craig/Adam's charms didn't compensate enough for the difference...OUCH, I know, but hey, I'm critical of myself too(its just this review is not, alas, about me).I love the idea of acting, producing, writing, directing oneself, but it rarely works (read: Ed Burns). So big kudos to Craig Chester for getting his film made, just a shame it was unwatchable.
