Stellead Don't listen to the Hype. It's awful
Curapedi I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
Hayden Kane There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Scarlet The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Syl I'm sure Brian Dennehy must have hated doing this role portraying sadistic, cruel serial killer, John Wayne Gacy. In this film version of the events that led to his capture and the revelations of the thirty plus lives that he tortured and murdered and kept as souvenirs to remember. Dennehy gives a performance that is both riveting and frightening and yet we can't wait to see what he does next. Especially when he's trapped by the law and being followed everywhere, still trapped in the closet, he refuses to describe himself as homosexual. Gacy was truly a hated individual who nobody missed now or ever. Dennehy deserves an Emmy for his portrayal because he tries to bring a heart to a heartless villain of a character. In reality, Gacy was the bogeyman that we children feared. Margot Kidder is memorable as the psychic who sees the horror at the home. THe mini-series is worth watching to see a great American actor like Dennehy turn this role into a winner.
MarieGabrielle Brian Dennehey BECOMES John Wayne Gacy, as you watch this film you can only imagine the horrible fate of the victims. The beginning starts out with Robert Piest, well portrayed, who is picked up by Gacy for construction work (this was his method of trolling for young boys). Gacy owned his own contracting company in Des Plaines, Illinois. The actress who is Piest's mother is heart-rending; as she pleads with the police to take her son's disappearance seriously. In the Chicago area a missing person is nothing new, but it was her birthday and Rob never showed up. ..." He would never run away from home... he is not that type of boy"..., she mentions, and Detective Joe Koczenczak (very well portrayed by Michael Riley) takes notice of the situation.Dennehey is superb, when the police first visit Gacy's house in Des Plaines, we can feel the menacing evil and rage simmering just below the surface. Gacy shows the police his pictures with Rosalynn Carter, his promotion as manager of Kentucky Fried Chicken, and his "commendations" for contributions to local police and firefighters (a fixation common among sociopaths; they are very high functioning, and socially enjoy manipulating authority figures).Gacy also apparently used drugs to lure young men to his house, there are several scenes where he uses Qualuudes, and the detectives are following him, realizing the extent of his social connections. What is so horrifying is that, on the surface, Gacy was a well-liked businessman who had many friends. He was not a reclusive psycho who stood out in the crowd. As Detective Koczenczack becomes more frustrated trying to mount evidence against Gacy he is thwarted many times by D.A. Meg Foster, who cannot make a case if Gacy's rights are violated. The case is interesting and disturbing all the more so because it is true. Margot Kidder also has a cameo as a psychic, who relays to Koczenzack that there are many, many more victims; this will not be an easy case. The soundtrack at the end, as they are searching for more victims, and pan out over the cemetery, is very haunting. So sad for any of the parents and young men who were affected by this monster, John Wayne Gacy, who was executed in 1994.
m-i-de-kramer I like Brian Dennehy very much, he is such a great actor, he is a natural talent and i love the movie ''to catch a killer'', its a very shocking and creepy true story, and like the way Brian act is just fantastic! Anyway..almost every movie he play fantastic. I just love this man, and i would like to meet him for real, because i have heard he must be a real gentleman, i would like to figure that out, ha ha..really, he is one of the greatest actors i know. I'm looking for this movie so many times in the Netherlands with Dutch subtitling, but i could not found it, its a shame! But i did see the movie for almost 4 times, and every time is forget to put a tape in the recorder. I just want this movie so badly!Love and greetings, Monique, Rotterdam, Netherlands
jonm11100 I have the full-length DVD version of this movie and, while it is fairly suspenseful, it would have been much better had they made it more believable. For one thing, by today's standards, the movie was way too "tame." John Wayne Gacy was a MONSTER, yet in the entire 3+ hours of this movie, he never utters ONE curse word. The worst thing he says is something like, "so long, dummies." Yeah, right. Why couldn't they have let Brian Dennehy utter a few "F***S" or "S**TS", as is probably what Gacy would have said "in the REAL world?" Also, the police discovered somewhere in the neighborhood of 32 bodies under Gacy's house. Why couldn't they have included at least a little bit of the "gore" that the police actually found on that fateful day? Anybody who has an interest/fascination in the subject of serial killers usually WANT to see the bodies, if nothing else, out of curiosity. Not only would that have made the movie more believable, but also more frightening, which is what horror movie fans want to feel in the first place. I also have several questions regarding the actual plot of the movie. One example is this business about them using a "psychic" who looked in her "crystal ball" and told the detective she saw all the bodies buried under the house. I have read many books on the Gacy case and have never heard of that happening. (isn't it odd that psychics can always tell you only PART of what you want to know, but never a direct answer?) There are many other "holes" in this movie, but I won't mention them here, just to save time. Over all, on a scale of 1 - 10, I would rate this movie a 5, simply because it is too "networky", if you know what I mean. It's too "squeaky-clean". Almost "family-oriented", because it is all totally "suggestive."
