CommentsXp Best movie ever!
Doomtomylo a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
BelSports This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Ann Laure I was looking for a new TV show to watch when a friend of mine told me about the Pillars of the Earth and recommended it. After watching it for ten minutes, I was already in love with the characters and the plot. It totally amazed me until the last episode: the story is so well constructed, the realism of life in middle age so well implied, I was caught in it in the blink of an eye. I strongly recommend this show, as well as Ken Follett's original novel, to anyone wishing to see something different from modern and traditional American series. This one is a real outstanding masterpiece. However, I was a bit disappointed with season 2. While season 1 was totally inspired by Follett's novel, season 2 seems to be a marketing product with less authenticity, and left me quite frustrated because of its banality. But it is still worth being seen, though.
mari_del_mar Beautiful Music. Tom Builder is very well portrayed. Beautiful scenes, photographs cathedrals, etc. For the first 3 episodes, it almost sticks to the plot of the book. That's as much good stuff as I can put about it.+ The whole book was inspired by medieval architecture. The miniseries completely ignores this. The one or two details that deal with the subject are wrong.+ The main character (Prior Phillip) which is a formidable presence in the book, is watered-down to little more than a wishy-washy simpleton.+ By the last chapters the story has departed so much from the (VERY GOOD) book, that it is really quite difficult to believe it's based on it. By the very end, it simply has no connection whatever with the plot of the book.
carrotslaughter That is what me and my significant other call this exhausting tripe of a show. Its only redeeming quality is the music - the wonderful Gregorian chants have really been the high point of several episodes. Other than that, it's just gratuitous nudity, unnecessary violence, incest that apparently wasn't in the book, and uneven progression of the story. Bishop Waleran was the most enjoyable character, mostly for being so ambitious and uncompromising, albeit very flat and predictable. All in all, for a show set in the Middle Ages, it felt like watching a soap about a hippie commune in the 21st century - not what I expected or wanted to see.
CurledAngel As a huge fan of the book, I had great expectations for the on-screen adaptation of a novel offering such a huge potential. What a disappointment it has been! The cast does not match any of the descriptions in the book. The story has been cut down to such an extent that it is no longer the same story. Facts have been changed or are simply missing. Basically, the writers of this TV adaptation re-wrote the whole thing to their liking but certainly not to mine. For example, Jack is turned into a strong courageous and very assertive young fellow with rather good looks instead of the weak and not so good looking boy in the original story. They have also cut all the erotic content that spiced up the book, which is also a huge let down obviously. The story telling is left to be desired as the dialogue has also suffered from heavy cutting. The whole thing struggles to make any sense and only if you have read the book will you manage to understand what is going on.The pace does not reflect the real time line at all. For instance, at no time do you feel any of the despair the family felt from starvation at the beginning. Their journey was long and extremely difficult. In this adaptation, it feels like a mere walk in the park.In a nutshell, if you have loved the book, you will hate this adaptation. If I were in Ken Follett's shoes, I would be very upset with the result.
