Smartorhypo Highly Overrated But Still Good
WillSushyMedia This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
Jenna Walter The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
Allison Davies The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
MaximumMadness "The Osbournes", which ran from 2002-2005, was an Emmy Award Winning Mtv Reality-Show following the Prince of *Bleeping* Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne, and his family (sans daughter Aimee, who chose not to participate) living their normal, day-to-day lives. It was revolutionary, and was one of Mtv's biggest hits of all time. It brought us a personal view with the family of a rock icon, and showed us that despite at the glitz and glamor, all the controversy and whatnot... they are a true family, like any others. The series starts with Ozzy, his wife Sharon (who I just adore, she seems like so much fun), and his kids Jack and Kelly (along with about a dozen dogs and cats), as they move into their new home. Each episode deals with something eventful happening around the Osbourne home... from his kid's dating lives, to the disappearance of their cats, to the annoying neighbors, to Ozzy touring and even to personal struggles like Sharon's battle with cancer. It's all here. It's all blatant. It's real. The thing about the show that worked so well was the dynamic of the Osbournes as a family. While there were obviously some circumstances that set them apart from others (such as wealth and notoriety), it really doesn't matter- they went through struggles that are universal for virtually every family. It was quite touching (and refreshing) to see people interacting with one another as a family first on television. It was very humanizing, and nobody was ever portrayed as a bad person. They were presented as human beings, with flaws and perfections. It was indeed a very touching show... it never felt exploitive of the family, and you never were laughing or experiencing feelings at the expense of them. And after that thought, I will say that the show was extremely humorous, because it was so identifiable. Many people seem to point out the profanity in the show, or some outlandish situations, but for me, the humor was always an organic extension of the family, and was the same humor I find within my own family- humor from bickering, humor from saying the wrong thing, humor from doing something you later regret. It is extremely funny, from a personal perspective, as one can easily relate to these humorous situations. All in all, I found "The Osbournes" to be one of the few Reality Shows that actually was real, and was worth watching. Despite having ended after only three years, and having never released it's final seasons on DVD (only the first two were released), it remains one of the shows I still love and occasionally watch, and to me, was the best Reality program of its decade. A 10 out of 10.
tsf-1962 Someone once described "The Osbournes" as "The Munsters" in rehab. This is unfair to the Munsters, who underneath their monstrous facades were quite normal, almost wholesome (after all, "The Munsters" had the same producers as "Leave It To Beaver.") The Addams Family were truly deranged, which makes them perhaps a more apt comparison. I enjoyed this show at first, mainly because I thought it was all a put on; nobody, I thought, could really be that stupid. Then Ozzy had his near-fatal ATV accident and it stopped being funny. Evidently there really are people that stupid. I must admit I admire Sharon Osbourne, a plain-speaking matriarch who proves the adage that behind every great man stands a good woman. It's largely thanks to her guidance that Ozzy has maintained his credibility with the younger generation despite being one of the founding fathers of heavy metal. He was playing with Black Sabbath back in 1969, when Richard Nixon was president, the Mets won their first world series and Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. The nice thing about "The Osbournes" was that you could enjoy it without being a fan of Ozzy or heavy metal. It's hard to reconcile the kindly if stupefied grandfatherly figure (who always makes me think of Benjamin Franklin) with the ghoul who used to bite the heads off of live birds. The kids were the real stars, especially Kelly, but they've had their fifteen minutes of fame and I doubt they'll have a very long shelf life. Still, it was fun while it lasted.
the_buffster I loved the show, and I bought the DVD so I could watch it whenever I wanted. I still think it's funny. If you watch it on DVD, I recommend leaving the "bleeps" on (so you can't hear the swearing), because otherwise the show looses much of its charm and cuteness. With the swearing in full-force, it seems much more like a dysfunctional family with way too much money and time on their hands. I only wish I also had the second, third, fourth seasons on DVD, too. But the first season is definitely the best. The bonus features are pretty funny. I recommend the blooper reel! Pretty funny stuff. Also, the menus on the DVD are really creative and involve the family dogs (not Kelly!) doing some pretty funny stuff.
henry-girling We've seen all this before! This is just the 'Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet'(1952) with added cussing and bodily functions. Man of the house who used to be in a successful band and has a laid back approach to life - Ozzy/Ozzie. Woman of the house being more savvy and liking lots of shopping - Sharon/Harriet. Even offspring who go in for a music career - Kelly/Ricky.Both are ostensibly about the everyday lives of the Nelsons and the Osbournes, saying this is what we are really like but of course that isn't true at all. In the presence of a camera everyone performs, are not themselves, which is why the phrase 'reality TV' is such a misnomer.'The Osbournes' does have some bright moments but you have to wade through a lot of wadding to get there.
