Synopsis

Britain is in the grip of a chilling recession... falling wages, rising prices, civil unrest - only the bankers are smiling. It's 1783 and Ross Poldark returns from the American War of Independence to his beloved Cornwall to find his world in ruins: his father dead, the family mine long since closed, his house wrecked and his sweetheart pledged to marry his cousin. But Ross finds that hope and love can be found when you are least expecting it in the wild but beautiful Cornish landscape.

Bereamic Awesome Movie
Paynbob It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
Juana what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
julia2702 Woow. I did not expect to find such a gem when I started watching. I came across a pic of Aidan Turner in a triangle hat a while ago, and somehow did not feel inspired to watch - no matter his good looks :) But as I finally began - I was glued to the screen for hours on end, watching episode after episode, hankering for more each time! What a story. And what a hero. Whoever cast Aidan and Eleanor deserves the best prize. They are both so attractive, so distinctive-looking and so right for the parts! The man has become a heart-throb for many (myself included), even though we may not realize it's Aidan-Ross that we are all in love with, and he only exists on a film set :)Brilliant acting from Mr Turner. So much heart, and warmth, and passion, and emotion! Magnetic smile and voice. Demelza's natural beauty is a treat for the eyes, likewise. Tender yet strong, simple yet incredibly wise. All other actors are wonderful, too. I was a bit against Heida Reed at first, but I grew to love her so much as the show progressed. The story and the script, gorgeous Cornwall scenery and beautiful soundtrack.. So much to love. This series goes straight to your heart. It's the level of production quality when you forget these are not real people.10 stars, friends. No words will suffice to express my gratitude to the cast and crew - for almost 40 hours of pure bliss.
ZinQ The acting is quite simply, terrible. I never watched the first. But this is just silly. It's only the gorgeous Aidan Turner keeping me watching.
kitellis-98121 I came to this show reluctantly, being in desperate need of an 18th century epic drama upon which to binge, having recently finished my third-go-round of Outlander.I say "reluctantly" because the promotional images I'd seen for Poldark, plus snippets I'd read - including stories about Eleanor Tomlinson (never heard of her) publicly complaining that she wasn't paid as much as her co-star, despite him being an internationally recognised movie star fresh off a three billion dollar Hollywood blockbuster trilogy - combined to both irritate me, and convince me that Poldark was likely to be a tame, Sunday evening, family-friendly, BBC-PC load of un-challenging twaddle, targeted at menopausal women and owners of lace doilies.I was right. Somewhat. However, it is so well done, if you can get through the first few episodes, that it does eventually become addictive, as desired. It turns out that despite my lack of doilies or dried-up eggs, I have become a reluctant fan.Despite my initial suspicion that this would be unbearably feminist, pandering to a target audience of "modern" women seeking to ogle the lead actor's six-pack while re-enforcing their beliefs that all men are sexist misogynistic bastards, I was pleasantly surprised to find a gripping and intelligent social commentary unfolding, that focused more on social justice rather than sexual politics. So, although I still hold the "target" audience in all the contempt that they so richly deserve, I find that the product itself is of a superior quality that is equally fit for male consumption. (Though nowhere near as good as Outlander, of course!)P.S. Much of this was written with an ironic tongue planted firmly in my cheek, so lower your hackles and un-bristle your tails, all you angry man-haters out there! :p
jaycopson Even Seinfeld wasn't always perfect, but I have yet to watch an episode of this series that left me feeling even the slightest disappointment. Although I certainly wouldn't expect to be let down--based on the absolutely fantastic seasons played thus far--it just becomes hard to believe that the series will bowl yet another strike. I barely view any television, and I've already re-watched the first season. There are ample ups and downs and twists, and you will likely be kept in suspense between episodes, but one of the most wonderful qualities of Poldark is the way the story will lift your spirits and revive your optimism about the human experience in general.
