As Good As It Gets

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

...when you get a chance. I saw it on HBO, which will run series favorites once every one or two years. This show is well done, although they improvised many events that were fictional. The actually lives of Masters and Johnson may have been a little too boring, so story embellishment went into its production, but that didn't undermine the quality. This was basically Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan's project of tender loving care since both actors played the lead roles and also produced for this show. They wanted this series to work, and it did well for four seasons. Lizzy Caplan essentially stole the show, and perhaps you remember her from 'Mean Girls' ? The acting was excellent, and the approach to bring in famous stars into supporting roles was exactly the same thing that Mad Men did successfully. This show is funny, dramatic and sexy. At least watch one episode to decide for yourself, but it's a good idea to check it out. I should've given it a 10, but many critics had some concerns that I couldn't ignore.

I thoroughly enjoyed this show. The characters were interesting, though not unrealistically so. I love the fashion, and seeing it change over time. I love how the characters were 100% in the part. I never felt they were letting modern society slip through in their gestures or expressions, like many actors do.I learned something from Master of Sex and it wasn't anything about sex. I learned that people from their generation just did not give a crap about their children. It makes sense, as my parents are from that era, and my childhood was a mix of them hosting cocktail parties or them going out or on business trips and vacations without the kids. It's like they had no idea what being a parent meant, and even though Masters finally conquers his fear of showing affection towards his son, I think most parents then didn't have that same revelation.

I've made it through 2 1/2 seasons...and this shows just gets worse and worse. Dr. Masters and his snotty, racist wife are such utterly unlikeable characters, why should I care what happens to either one of them? Why do Bill's wife and Virginia stay with this abusive, egotistical as#%$$hole? It just seems that any sane woman wouldn't put up with his abuse and manipulations. "Oh, poor Dr. Masters. He's so complex and misunderstood." No, he's just an a@#hole. And its been a while since I've watched a show completely devoid of any humor, especially in season two. The show has no ups and downs...its one steady, boring storyline. No "whoa, I didn't see that coming", or any really dramatic moments. It just drags along, with a bunch of self-centered unlikable characters.

It was time for a show that explores the research about human sexuality and exposes the range of all it's issues on cable TV. This is another step to break old taboos and en-light some hot headed viewers about the subject. I myself didn't know about Masters and Johnson study and I'm delighted about it's adaptation. Season 1st was very good but season 2nd is great! The study is developing and lots of subjects are interconnected. I wonder if the 3rd Season will cover later developments in Dr Masters and Virginia Johnson's personal life. This shows has lots of material to cover from the research done from 1957 until the 1990s I sure hope the studios grant time to cover all this and that the actors and the public keep interested in this project.Keep up the great work!
