Intcatinfo A Masterpiece!
Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Guillelmina The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
bbewnylorac This was a fantastic series. Original, imaginative, very funny, touching and often quite thrilling. In John Simm (Sam) and Philip Glenister (Gene), the producers found a cracking team of cops - the former the bewildered modern day cop transported back to the 1970s after getting run over by a car, and the latter an old-time 1970s regional British detective who Sam has to work with. Yes, there is a lot of fun satire of everyone smoking, of deadbeat crims getting a hard time from the police and lots of early model car chases and primitive sieges in old factories. But there's also poignant scenes of Sam's distress at being in such an absurd situation, juxtaposed against his determination to make the most of it -- to convict criminals and fight corruption, even if he often feels like it's a losing battle. Simm's character is earnestly honest but also short tempered and sad, i.e. he's not just a wide-eyed time traveller. Glenister steals just about every scene he's in. He throws everything at his role. The line "you are surrounded by armed bastards" during yet another factory siege, is one of the classics of modern day police drama. I didn't like the more supernatural/sinister aspects. I don't think they were thought through very well. I would have been happy for him to just to travel back in time, with flashes of being in a coma, without all that spy malarkey. I would have loved this series to go on for years, but I guess it made its point and might be more memorable for being short and sweet. The ending is quite distressing. I was quite shocked by it. It's daring and certainly very thought provoking. He kind of makes a choice to live in the exciting past rather than the more monotonous future.
francogothica well, honestly when i saw the trailers for this show i thought it would be utter tripe but after having seen the first couple of episodes i was entirely engrossed by the interesting slants given on this '70's' cop show. the characters are compelling throughout the whole series especially Gene Hunt who really makes this show go from a 9 to a perfect 10.other brilliant areas within this show would be the intriguing coma/time travel/mad concept which at certain times within the show was downright terrifying and at others added a nice layer of intrigue. all in all a real must see for anyone who enjoys funny, interesting dialogue and strangely compelling characters.
Turambar-3 The premise of this show, just the idea of a 70's cop show, has huge potential. It's one of those ideas that a bunch of people in Hollywood will come up with all at once in a wave, just because the 70's are such low-hanging TV fruit. Unfortunately, the idea that was chosen is a lame one to begin with, "I woke up in the 1970's! Not sure why!" "Life On Mars" also has some very good actors. That's why it's painful watching them, as I write this comment, woodenly coughing out really, truly terrible, formulaic, banal, boring and predictable lines to a raucous backdrop of equally-formulaic 70's-era hits and flame-filled non-sensical explosions. For the past hour Sam has roamed the episode constantly dropping clever bon mots from 2008 and modern-style cop puns so that we won't forget even for a second that he's from the superior future. The writers don't miss a single moment to cram it down our throats that we're in the 70's now. I've seen every LOM so far; I held on and hoped for the best, but tonight I finally reached my disgust threshold."Life On Mars" has everything it needs going for it except sufficient cleverness. "Lost", the show that comes on (for me) before it, is so well-written that one can suspend disbelief while an entire island (replete with ghosts, no less) disappears and skips around the Indian Ocean. "Life On Mars" has a far more down-to-Earth plot, but it needs a miracle at least as big as Lost's sapient island to make it work.
mickymee100 I just happened to tune in to "Life on Mars" while channel surfing and immediately decided to make it one of my regular viewing choices. Love the music - it really takes me back! Also, seeing the fashions of the 70's makes me laugh out loud. My sister and I watch faithfully each week and rehash each episode over the phone the following day. So much on television today seems to be so ho-hum but this show has such an outstanding cast and great lines! I don't remember seeing this show advertised very much prior to airing which may have something to do with the lack of viewer numbers. As I commented earlier, I just stumbled upon it while "surfing". I've heard the show won't be picked up for a second season but I am hoping the network will reconsider.
