Synopsis

A provocative and darkly comic meditation on the disparate forces polarizing present-day American culture, as experienced by the members of a progressive multi-ethnic family — a philosophy professor and his wife, their adopted children from Vietnam, Liberia and Colombia and their sole biological child — and a contemporary Muslim family, headed by a psychiatrist who is treating one of their children.

FeistyUpper If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
Tedfoldol everything you have heard about this movie is true.
Kidskycom It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
AshUnow This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
mariabjazzin-519-383278 Before I began watching this series I already learned there would be no season 2, but because of Holly Hunter and Timothy Robbins, I also knew I had to watch it. I immersed into their world for two days, absolutely loving every build up, connection, revelation. Of course this is not a series for the ultra conservative, but there is something there for everyone - love, devotion, dedication, confusion, teenage angst, mental instability, serendipity, family. At first I was a bit confused with the reason for the visions, but to me, it but as the last episode ended I understood. The therapist and his patient were brought together to help heal each other. The young man with the visions was drawn to the erupting volcano so that he could lead people trapped on the volcano to safety. He saw them with masks on in a vision and as he was approaching the volcano they appeared as shadows in the fallen ash. As in life, the marriage between Holly and Timothy's character will repair as they both move through their personal journey together. The story lines of religion, family, meaning of life, and acceptance rings true for every day life and every person, though shown in a dramatic way. It's cinema.
savlikefilm As some others, I felt compelled to give a different perspective when seeing so many negative reviews here. This show is truly incredible from its acting to its interwoven storyline. People seem very wrapped up in the confusion of the 11:11 plot, but it's meant to be uncomfortable and exploratory rather than have a set of definitive answers; it's meant to imitate real life. The only reason I don't give it a solid 10 is because the liberal activism is admittedly a bit over-the-top and distractive to the storyline, but some if it is necessary for the context. It also shows a unique side to extreme political correctness: hypocrisy. Shaving a bit of that off would make this show exceptional. Alan Ball undoubtedly would have been able to redeem himself with a second season.
Bill Jordan Five stars because the performances are decent, and the show kept us (the wife and me) interested enough to think it was building up to something compelling and clever. The ending was a HUGE letdown. Much was never explained, and as the show has been cancelled, it never will be. Frankly, I'm not sure the writer(s) actually had a plan for where the storyline was going, but figured they'd just keep putting in puzzling experiences until the show got cancelled or they thought of something. I would almost have been tempted to watch a 2nd season just to see if this really was going somewhere. I'm glad I won't have to make that decision.
kellybailey-23521 It's unbelievable how so many characters and stories are in this show, and not one story line loses any dynamic or momentum for the sake of another. This show is written so exceptionally, the main and multiple story lines are a brilliantly cohesive unit that work together to move the show forward. That is so amazing -- think about that when you watch how multi-faceted this show is. Connecting all the chaos. Alan Ball, your mind is so beautiful! The entire cast is brilliant but two actors especially stood out for me -- Peter Macdissi as the psychiatrist, and Marwan Salama, who plays his son. Salama is a radiant presence onscreen, quite mesmerizing.
