Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Taha Avalos The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
bitomurder There are two things, historically speaking, that really grab my attention and for which I cannot get enough of: war and space. From the Earth to the Moon is the story of the latter and specifically the Apollo program that led mankind to make its first steps on the surface of another world. The story of the space race in the 1960's has always fascinated me and as I write this I can think of no single achievement in human history that rivals the moon landing. This mini-series, released on HBO in 1998, captures the grandeur of the trip we made to our sister world nearly 50 years ago. From the Earth to the Moon is an anthology series that tells many different stories in different ways. There are straight forward episodes like Mare Tranquilitatis about the famous Apollo 11 landing alongside other stories like "Spider" about the construction of the Lunar Module or "The Original Wives Club" about the wives of the brave astronauts and while there's some good stuff contained in the off stories, the real bread and butter of this tale are the episodes directly involving the moon landings. While it's ok to visit some other tales what you really want is to see Alan Shepard or Pete Conrad treking through the lunar dust. The mini-series is great and probably, along with the film Apollo 13, is the best story of the thousands of people who participated in the greatest journey of mankind's history, but the show never really reaches the highs that it could (I'm looking at you "The Original Wives Club"), but thankfully never reaches the lows either. If you are fascinated with manned space flight like myself then check out "From the Earth to the Moon" and you won't be disappointed.
wildcarrde I saw this in its first run back in 1998. I was completely engrossed then, so when the DVDs were released, I was one of the first people to purchase a set. In fact, I had purchased the VHS set before the DVDs were released! "From the Earth to the Moon" is a 12 part narrative of the history of the U.S. Space program from 1961 through 1972 inclusive. Tom Hanks and Imagine Enterainment deliver to us a spectacular rendition of what it took to get a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s.Shot with the full cooperation of NASA and based in part on Andrew Chaikin's book, the series is as accurate as a series can be. Of course, not every detail of the 13 year history of the Mercury/ Gemini/ Apollo programs are told in detail. But the most pivotal moments in the program's history are explored in fine fashion. The favorite episode for me was "1968". Juxtaposed against worldwide turmoil including the Tet offensive, the Chicago convention, the Prague spring and the assassinations of Dr. King and Bobby Kennedy, is the effort to put Americans into Lunar orbit for Christmas. Though all the episodes stand out on their own, this one would have to be any historian's favorite (which is probably why it's mine). So if you lived through that era and want to relive one of the shining moments of American history, you should buy this set and enjoy it. I was 5 at the time of the first moon landing so most of the events were a blur, thus I loved watching this series. If you didn't live through it, and you want to know why we should have made such a monumental effort, you should watch this series to understand what humanity can really do when it puts its differences to the side and focuses on a common purpose. The only reason this set isn't totally perfect is that the superb original music was never released. The soundtrack that was released was just a rehash of old 60s tunes that anyone can get at the local record store or on Amazon.Other than that, a very good series that anyone will enjoy, and other than some mild language sparsely scattered about, fully enjoyable for all ages.
vtcavuoto As a young boy, I always dreamed of being an Astronaut. This mini-series made me remember those dreams. "From the Earth to the Moon" is a masterpiece. The whole history of getting a man on the moon, from the Mercury program through Gemini to the Apollo missions are chronicled. The acting is awesome, the sets are extremely realistic and the action and drama(and some humor)of the early period of NASA is sensational. If one needed a history lesson about our early space program, I would recommend this series. My favorite characters are Nick Searcy as Astronaut Donald "Deke" Slayton (who was grounded due to physical ailments-he would later fly on the Apollo-Soyez mission)and Stephen Root as Flight Director Chris Kraft. This is one space series not to be missed. You won't be disappointed.
julian kennedy Scored 5/10 From the Earth to the Moon is a strange bird. Not a mini series in the strictest sense. Each episode is self-contained with virtually no characters, except the space program itself, moving from one episode to the next. Each episode therefore is like a one-hour self-contained movie all sharing the same sets. Three are brilliantly done (episode 2 "Apollo 1" episode 5 "Spider" and episode 7 "That's all there is") The rest are either simply OK to outright misses (episodes 8 and 9) and by the time you are ready to spend an hour exclusively with the astronauts wives (episode 11) the whole thing seems a bit of a slog. Don't get me wrong the acting, sets and special effects are brilliant throughout but some magic is missing. When Apollo 11 lands on the moon there is no magic, no excitement. It is all very low key strangely focused on Buzz Aldrin's feelings about being second. I was also wondering what they were to do next since we land on the moon episode six in a twelve episode series. The lack of a character or two that can be followed from episode to episode gives one little reason to invest in the slower episodes that follow number 7. There simply is no payoff in sticking with the program. In the beginning of episode 8 about Apollo 13 Tom Hanks laments that Americans had become bored with the space program. The episode then spends 50 minutes digging up old chestnuts about old media versus new media. Turns out the American viewing public weren't the only ones bored with outer space.
