gator-35584 as soon as the doctor is murder the town would be full of police...are there only a few folks... no one after the thugs.... it is a thriller but not worth watching... good for you who liked it Everyone gets killed...and if she only had one customer a day she would close....even a slow place needs more then one employee.. oh and let rent room to the killers... this is s stupid movie...typical plot....good guys helps bad guys and everyone gets killed....don't waste your time watching this movie..I wasted my time writing this review...go what the High Serra with Humphrey Bogart...it is thriller that makes sense. This movie is very predictable....and the story is very shallow....the town only has ten people.....I rate it a two....out of ten
MarieGabrielle Granted the premise has been done, but this is a fun suspense film and also as Josh Lucas in it, so add a few stars.Radha Mitchell is basically a restaurant/motel owner in a desolate Oregon town. She has a customer (Barry Watson, child actor from "Seventh Heaven" for anyone who recalls that series, circa 1997).Anyway, odd things start to occur and her doctor friend becomes a victim. Three strangers apparently on vacation drop in, and proceed to terrorize her.Radha Mitchell is believable though, and has since been in a Woody Allen film ("Melinda and Melinda") so she does a few things right.Watch for Josh Lucas in recent period piece "Stolen" also with Jon Hamm (from "Mad Men") a nice suspense film recently made in 2009. Overall give "Strangers" a chance. 8/10.
pttibg I'm a dial twitcher & world weary...pretty much have seen it all already. Turned this on TV & watched a little & switched to another channel. Had to turn back...it was that compelling. Highly recommend for all the reasons any of the other reviewers did AND that it held my interest, which is a good enough reason for me to watch anything. Had to suspend belief to buy that this many very good looking people, ESPECIALLY Josh Lucas, who could easily be a candidate to fill the shoes of Paul Newman with those eyes, would be doing such evil things or living such strange lives. Must've been something real important on that CD.
Brad Z "When Strangers Appear" is problematic in many ways. It is the kind of movie after which a viewer often feels duped. The plot is secondary to the action. Characters are introduced for the sole purpose of confusing the viewer. I enjoy suspense movies, but this offering hardly lives up to the movie part of that formula. It is nothing but a vehicle for shocking-if unexplained and probably unexplainable-imagery. Of course, these scenes don't really advance the story as such, which is actually a superficial structure laid on top of a series of cheap cliffhangers. This movie is not absurdist (Pasolini would twirl in his grave if that label were ever applied to this picture) but just absurd. I can't believe a producer gave this script the green light.
