Lightdeossk Captivating movie !
Limerculer A waste of 90 minutes of my life
SanEat A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."
Sarita Rafferty There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
MissMargoChanning That is just what you get in the lovely Shirley McLain's wardrobe alone! That isn't in just her marriage to the wonderful Robert Mitchum sequence in this delightful film.... Throughout , you really did want to know what she would be wearing next, from her marriage to Dick Vandyke to the sexy Paul Newman to the afore mentioned Robert Mitchum to the incredibly talented Gene Kelly. She was also married to a fifth husband and we all hope it was her last. Dean Martin ended up shedding his snake skins and actually turned into the man of her dreams! You gotta love this movie just for the clothes alone! I loved this film when I was a kid. I love it more now. It may be silly but it's fun! What a way to go!
girvsjoint 'What A Way To Go' is one of those quirky comedies of the 60's that probably wouldn't work today, although it certainly did back then! Shirley MacLaine never looked lovelier as the girl who just dreams of a simple life, yet finishes up with riches beyond her dreams, because of the men she marries, who, apart from Robert Mitcham, start off poor, but somehow manage to make millions, then die from their obsession with money! Among the husbands, Dick Van Dyke, Robert Mitcham, Paul Newman, Gene Kelly, and, Dean Martin, not to mention the always marvellous Robert Cummings as Shirley's psychiatrist! An all star fun romp, not to be analysed, just sit back and enjoy the ride, and let these masters of their craft do their thing!
bkoganbing If the fans of the various leading men and Shirley MacLaine just attended this film, What A Way To Go was certainly guaranteed to be a hit at the box office. It would have to be to justify the salaries of the cast involved. It was that and more. What A Way To Go is a bright comedy showing the talents of Shirley MacLaine to full advantage, including her dancing talents in the segment involving Gene Kelly. Shirley relates in flashback to a lecherous psychiatrist, Bob Cummings the incredibly rotten luck she's had with her marriages. Widowed four times Shirley is worth over $200,000,000.00. Her pattern is to marry men who are poor with one exception and they become rich and then meet with bizarre deaths. Her husbands in order were Dick Van Dyke, Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, and Gene Kelly. Mitchum was already rich, but became incredibly much richer while married to Shirley. He also met the most bizarre death in the film which you'll have to see because it's too funny to reveal.Kelly played a song and dance man who played in a clown makeup. Each of the segments involved a dream sequence where Shirley relates to Cummings that in her ideal stage of the marriage it reminded her of some happy movie genre. In the Kelly sequence it involved a musical and we get to see Shirley dance which she didn't do enough of on the big screen. There is another man in her life in Dean Martin, but how he figures in you have to see What A Way To Go. This was the farewell film appearance for both Margaret Dumont who played Shirley's mother and for Tom Conway who had a bit role. What A Way To Go still retains a lot of the good humor for today's audiences. I could see a remake of it with someone like Julia Roberts being married to Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, etc. They'd have to go some to replace a dancer like Gene Kelly though.
wlcdsla If you look carefully at the flashing computer display in "What A Way To Go!", you'll notice that the center of it says "THE END" - - - which indicates to me that it is indeed the SAME computer prop used in Fox's 1957 "DESK SET", with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn!! Also, the swimming pool set covered entirely in pink for "What A Way To Go!" is the SAME set originally utilized in the uncompleted "Something's Gotta Give" with Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin, which was being filmed at Fox when Marilyn suddenly died in 1962. 20th Century Fox studio execs in 1964 must've decided they had a ton of money wrapped up in that pool set and computer prop, so they were recycled for use in "What A Way To Go!"William Carroll Denham Springs, Louisiana
