Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
Arianna Moses Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
SnoopyStyle Steve Everett (Clint Eastwood) is a womanizing married recovering alcoholic. He returns to his journalist job at Oakland Tribune after rehab. A young reporter dies in an accident and he assigned her interview with death row inmate Frank Beechum (Isaiah Washington). Beechum was a troubled youth until he became born-again and married to Bonnie (LisaGay Hamilton). He's scheduled to be executed in a few hours for the murder of a pregnant store clerk but Everett starts to wonder about his guilt. There is a functional investigative crime mystery in this movie although the plot isn't very surprising. Clint Eastwood has filled it with too much uninteresting filler. Some of it is really cheesy. I think he wants Reverend Shillerman to be comic relief which really doesn't work. The most annoying is the Hollywood high speed chase to end the investigation. It's utterly ridiculous. Maybe he could call the governor or the prison or the wife. It's a bad attempt to make it artificially exciting.
FilmBuff1994 True Crime is a very mediocre film with a reasonably developed storyline and a terrific cast. The performances are certainly the highlight, the characterization for the majority of cast members is superb, with some very inspired acting from Clint Eastwood playing a character very different from his usual roles, the best scenes were the ones between him and Isaiah Washington, they are intense, emotional and the only parts that gave me any bit of a thrill. It shouldn't have been advertised as a thriller or a mystery, it shouldn't have been given the name True Crime, because with those genres and that title attached to it, you're going to expect to be put at the edge of your seat, some high level intensity with many exciting moments, and none of that is evident here, it mostly consists of the characters, normally just two, in a room together, talking, whether or not the performances are good, there comes a time when this simply becomes boring. There isn't as much conflict as there should be in this film either, Eastwood's character always has hope that he will crack this case, there's never really a moment where he loses it, a scene where he hits rock bottom and it dosen't seem like there's any way he can come out of it, this should be evident in every movie, but Eastwood seems to get his way far too often that it is unrewarding once the conflict is resolved in the end. Terrific performances sadly aren't enough to save a boring movie, and I wouldn't recommend True Crime to anyone. A journalist comes across new evidence that helps a man on death row. Best Performance: Clint Eastwood Worst Performance: Denis Leary
dankj The book has huge tension and builds drama throughout. The actions of the accused and the witness recounts in the movie make the guy look much more guilty than the book. Clint is famous for removing dialog and "extra" stuff from the screenplay, but this stripped down version has little of the "clock is ticking" tension and the witnesses are actually doing their best rather than embellishing to just convict the guy the police and prosecutor have pegged. The characters are not as well defined by the dialog or the direction/editing. The motivations and intensity of the characters is lacking as well. That said the movie is good, but a huge let down from the book.
Pussytiddy This Produced and Directed by and starring Clint Eastwood vehicle comes across as yet another Eastwood ego trip, he's even shoving his love of jazz down the viewer's throat again...and I think what we have here is a clear example of what happens when there isn't anybody there to say 'NO!'The story is ruined by knowing from the early scenes, the 'race against the clock' conclusion. It's all too obvious. The acting isn't great either. Denis Leary has one expression on his face throughout...a face that was just crying out for a good kicking! James Woods was under used and yet I thought his scenes were the film's highlights but a mere cameo couldn't save this wreck. Mary McCormack was equally wasted in her little part. The very worst piece of casting was Bernard Hill....truly bizarre. I don't suppose America has much idea about Yosser Hughes...I don't think it's possible to act and direct and give your best to both jobs. The pacing is all ponderous and Eastwood's performance is lazy...just the typical late era Eastwood characterisation of a hard drinking, lecherous b***ard who just happens to be the best at his job and it's lucky that it all just comes easy to him. Swap Dirty Harry's nose for his reporter's nose in this bilge...it's like Mr Benn trying on a different uniform each week.I loved Dirty Harry but those films became formulaic...and so has much of his acting since. The Space Cowboys bilge was even worse than this clunker, so maybe he's trying to kill his iconic status before he dies?
