Marva It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
Python Hyena The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep (2007): Dir: Jay Russell / Cast: Alex Etel, Emily Watson, Ben Chaplin, David Morrissey, Priyanka Xi: Compelling family film about those fascinating stories of yesteryear. Young Angus is afraid of water but discovers a rock while wading in the water that conceals a prehistoric creature. It hatches and predictably he befriends this creature while trying to conceal it, just as seen in E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. This arrives at a climax that somewhat borrows from Free Willy yet still works. This creature grows to massive size yet maintains a liking to Angus until soldiers arrive and begin firing cannons at it. Set in 1942 with the war in full steam director Jay Russell follows similar patterns that he demonstrated in My Dog Skip. Alex Etel plays the boy who faces his fears in the name of friendship as his miniature pet increases in size to the point where keeping it in the bathtub is useless. Emily Watson plays his mother who yields to the military until she feels that her family is under threat. Ben Chaplin plays a hired hand with military background who ends up helping Angus truck the creature to the sea side. David Morrissey plays the military captain who issues stern orders however the screenplay avoids clichés with an interesting positive side to this character when realizations surface. Priyanka Xi plays Angus's sister. Despite being often corny the theme brings life to the unseen. Score: 8 / 10
Leofwine_draca The setting is WW2 era Scotland, where a young boy discovers a strange egg which soon hatches into a dinosaur-like creature with a penchant for water. Against this tale lies a backdrop of conflict and strife, with locals, family members, and soldiers fleshing out the supporting characters. One of the best things about the production is the rugged scenery, almost a character in itself.THE WATER HORSE is an attempt at a modern-day fairy tale but the execution is strictly uniform. The amount of scenes involving the creature doing 'cute' things means that this is a story aimed at little kids who will no doubt be entranced by the Disney-style creation. On the plus side, the CGI effects are excellent throughout, only getting a little hokey at the climax for obvious reasons.Alex Etel (MILLIONS) plays the young protagonist, but he feels pretty miscast in the role, although we can be thankful it wasn't Freddie Highmore again. And in mentioning Highmore, I can't help but think this is much like the Hollywood version of FIVE CHILDREN AND IT, except lacking the complexity and charm of that film's original storyline. Although there are decent actors in support (Ben Chaplin, David Morrissey, Brian Cox), in the end THE WATER HORSE is one for kids only.
classicsoncall There's something about legends of mythical creatures that make them endure - The Abominable Snowman, Bigfoot, and yes, the Loch Ness Monster. I didn't know "The Water Horse" was a whimsical telling of the origins of the famous monster, but it was readily apparent once the story got under way. It was rather innovative the way the writers came up with the background story with the egg and all, and I always marvel at the way film makers can make a computer creation look real on screen. The baby water horse in the bath tub looked absolutely real, becoming only slightly less so as it grew into the huge monster of legend. There's an element of whimsy at work in the picture to go with the magic, and as a family viewing experience this one entertains well enough. I would only caution those with young kids that the adult water horse can be a fearsome creature, so prepare the youngsters accordingly. I'd put this film in my list of 'Movies About Horses', but that would obviously be a bit of a stretch.
g-bodyl Water Horse: Legend of the Deep is a much better film than I expected it to be. This movie is great for the entire family to watch together. There is no cursing and very little action. This movie has a central theme that is great for the family. The theme is about friendship and bonding with others. This film is about a young kid during the World War 2 era who finds a unusual egg in the famous loch lake in Scotland. It turns out that the egg ends up being a mystical water horse and the young kid begins a friendship that will change his life forever. The acting is solid for the most part. Alex Etel who plays Angus did a decent job but sometimes got on my nerves. The rest of the cast including Emily Watson and David Morressy did a good job.Overall, this is a great, magical film the whole family will enjoy. The special effects, music, and direction are standouts of this film. I rate this film 9/10.
