VeteranLight I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
FuzzyTagz If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
Chirphymium It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
Frances Chung Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
jlbrown100 The lead actresses deserve 9/10. The story concept 8/10. The whole package 6/10. The symbiotic relationship between the lead characters is realistic and develops quickly. The story line is a bit contrived but does express the characters' deep sense of loss and interdependency. It is very unfortunate that some of that energy is lost during the final symbolic scenes. Instead of leaving a lasting impression, they fall a bit flat. Nevertheless, this film is worth watching for the acting alone. It was impressive that Kaya Scodelario developed such a realistic American accent for the role. It adds another dimension to her excellent acting ability and (like Jessica Biel) she has the natural and very good looks to go with it.
ZULFIQAR RAJA 'The truth about Emanuel' is an engrossing movie which is punctuated by two great lead performances. Both Jessica and Kara have a real on screen chemistry as their relationship is one of the most powerful you have seen, and their characters of 'Linda' and 'Emmanuel' respectively also have mystery. The film primarily deals with the emotions of loss and grief as well as entering into a world where reality is not how it appears. The film is not well known but this movie is quality all the way, keeping the viewer on the edge as the 'truth' becomes more and more complex. The ending could have been better but in essence this movie is about raw emotions, taking you on a journey into the minds of two troubled women. Loved Jessica and Kara's performances !
donnie-baybie On reading the reviews for this film, I was expecting a slow paced and emotionally confusing story, but having watched this film I feel it has gone hideously unappreciated. The beginning is a little slow, and it's hard to connect to the characters initially, but the bond created between the teenager and woman is both unique and thought provoking. This film has lovely dynamics, and deals with the issues of loss and emotional wellbeing in a very poetic and intricate manner that cannot go unappreciated. I addition to these points, the music is also very well suited. All in all, this story is very quiet, poetic and special, and if you are someone who appreciates the relationship one can build with a film, then definitely waste no more time and watch this.
tigerfish50 More a surreal allegory than a realistic narrative, 'The Truth about Emanuel' portrays how two women deal with loss. One of them is Emanuel, an abrasive seventeen-year-old whose mother had died at her birth, who becomes increasingly alienated after her father's remarriage. The other is Linda, who moves into the next-door house with a new-born infant. After Emanuel impulsively offers babysitting services to her neighbor, she soon learns the older woman is more troubled than appearances would indicate.Emanuel and Linda supposedly establish a bond which gives them an opportunity to heal their respective traumas, but their relationship isn't very convincing, and the stylized nature of the film also chokes off any real connection to the characters. Although there's some competent acting and luminous cinematography, most of the time everything is too self-consciously strange and slow. Linda and Emanuel are supposed to be oddball personalities, but they're actually rather dull, and the obligatory big revelation doesn't contain any surprises. The resolution of their issues is both glib and implausible, and as a result, the climactic scenes play out without much emotional impact.
