CommentsXp Best movie ever!
Bluebell Alcock Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies
Kaelan Mccaffrey Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
Ezmae Chang This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
Daniel The Secret Life of Bees is a drama movie with some super stars like Queen Latifah and Alicia Keys. The is history is about a girl who lost her mother in tragic way when she was a little child. This girl has a lot of conflicts with her father and she wants to know more about her mother life's. The history is told in the 60's during a period of racial segregation and protests asking for civil right respect. The girl who is the protagonist, run away with a black woman to learn more about her mother's life. The movie focus on girl journey in knowing better her mother and the problems caused by the racial segregation. Although this movie presents serious problems like racial segregation and familiar conflicts, it is not tense all the time. It doesn't explore the violence scenes, but it can transmit the how was difficult the life of the characters. Because of that, it is a good movie to watch with family.
Python Hyena The Secret Life of Bees (2008): Dir: Gina Prince-Bythewood / Cast: Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, Paul Bettany, Alicia Keys: Insightful and emotional film set in the 1960's where the law was passed that colored people can vote. Dakota Fanning yearns to know who her mother is after a tragedy when she was young. She flees her abusive father along with her black caregiver and they find shelter at a bee farm. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood with bright locations particularly the honey farm. Strong performance by Fanning as the confused teenager. After fleeing from home she grows to enjoy life with this new family but sadden by tragic situations that result due too society tradition. Jennifer Hudson plays her caregiver who suffered at the hands of racism. She will find acceptance and happiness at the bee farm where her skills are put to greater use. Queen Latifah plays the head bee keeper with insight into Fanning's past. Her idol worship scenes are a tad hokey but she brings wisdom and warms to the story. Paul Bettany plays her frustrated father whose wife fled the scene now his daughter abandons him too. While abusive he will come to realize his acts and must face up to who he is and who his daughter is. Alicia Keys is also featured amongst the talented cast and goes beyond her music image. Superb film that brings light to an ugly time in history. Score: 9 / 10
elsworthyroad The Secret Life of Bees, an adaptation of the novel written by Sue Monk Kid, begins with a young Lily Owens sitting in the shadows at the bottom of a bedroom closet watching a woman shove stuff into the suitcase lying on the bed in a dimly lit room. Suddenly yelling booms from another room and a man barges through the doorway. The man starts shoving the woman around and she pulls out a gun. He takes it out of her hands and onto the floor. The gun slides across the floor towards the closet, and the woman reaches for it. Lily holds the gun out it front of her and a bang goes off along with a black screen. Lily has no other personal memories of her mother. Since that day, Lily has lived a life of abuse from her father. The only comforting voice she hears comes from Rosaleen, her housekeeper that she can always confide in. The two of them become inseparable through their journey to a town that Lily believes her mother visited. Lily keeps high faith that her mother really had been here, and set out to find out who her mother really was. The two companions find that Lily's mom's belongings, more specifically, a picture, lead them to the house belonging to August Boatwright and her two sisters, May and June. The three sisters take in Lily and Rosaleen with reluctance from June but, in return the two guests help cook and keep the bees. Slowly Lily builds herself a family and the bonds that come along with it. Lily learns about her mother's past with help from her newly found "mothers", showing us all how to reaching out will always bring something back to us.The movie truly shows the meaning of "family". Not the standard television commercial 4 people living in a house family, but a group of people that help each other through everything. A family that shows through the way that they care for one another, the way they just have everyone's best intentions at heart. A family made up of white and blacks in a time where it was not accepted. A family made up of a 14 year old girl and her mothers.
scootmandutoo I am a film buff, yet there are just a handful of films that blew me away emotionally at first watch. This is one of those films.I wasn't expecting this. I actually had gotten the DVD months ago and couldn't figure out why I hadn't seen it yet. I did not know the story, but I did like the cast and I had heard some good things. Even though I was a child at the time, that era has always fascinated and perplexed me. It's probably why my all time favorite TV series was "I'll Fly Away." This movie has a flawless cast. I was especially impressed with Dakota Fanning's continued development as an actress. But Jennifer Hudson and Sophie Okonedo were incandescent. Alicia Keys was a revelation in this film, though it took me a little while to warm up to her. And, Queen Latifah...well, this lady just seems to center everything.Movies to me are sometimes life-changing events. The ones that resonate the best are the ones that effectively give lessons about life.I guess if I mention that my all time favorite film is "A River Runs Through It," it might begin to explain why I instantly fell in love with this film. It has something profound to teach. And it does it with unforgettable imagery. Only time will tell if this film will stay with me like "River" did, but I suspect it will be a film I think about for quite some time.I have only watched the director's cut, so my comments are based on that, though I will go back and watch the theatrical version. This film truly is a gift.
