This movie just has some HILARIOUS parts. You know how athletes are SO good...SO talented that they make it look easy? THAT'S the case with Eddie Murphy as a comedic actor in this movie. There are parts that are simply incomparable-hilarious. Yes, it does look like they made the movie in a weekend...allowing Murphy to (obviously) Ad Lib in many parts. But THAT'S what makes this movie magical. It's SO fun to watch and SO funny...even when it's corny. THIS was Murphy at his apex...in a not-so-apex movie. For the sheer funniness of it and underrated aspect of Eddie Murphy just being a VERY good, NATURAL actor that makes it look EASY (I feel WILL win an Oscar one day if/when given the right role...it's kind of amazing he hasn't won one yet)...I give this movie a HIGH 8.

I dunno what it is about this movie that draws comparisons to "Big Trouble in Little China". Same year of release, similar east-west collision, a like-minded plunge into a bizarre underworld . . . But its hero is completely different. Eddie Murphy puts his comedic talents to likable use here, playing a capable P.I. who's dragged into something that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. A smartass who's always quick with a snide observation. But he's also a solid physical presence, and when pushed , can believably put some punk in a hurt locker. I walked into this thinking Charles Dance would steal the movie (he's surprisingly muted here), but this is an Eddie Murphy vehicle. And that's a good thing. 7/10

The Golden Child revives a dead bird in Nepal and is kidnapped by the evil Sardo Numspa (Charles Dance). Five days later in L.A., missing kids specialist investigator Chandler Jarrell (Eddie Murphy) is searching for Cheryll Mosley. Kee Nang (Charlotte Lewis) tells him about a 400 year old prediction. The Golden Child's destiny is to save the world and taken to a city of angels. He is to be saved by a man who's no angel and that's Jarrell. Cheryll's murder is linked to the missing Golden Child. In his dream, Sardo Numspa offers Jarrell the child in exchange for the Ajanti Dagger.Eddie Murphy is doing another wise-cracking detective and he's good at that. He has plenty of fun being sarcastic. The movie itself is inferior. Charlotte Lewis is absolutely beautiful but not the most charismatic. Only Victor Wong is able to take full advantage of Murphy. Their back and forth is fun. A lot of this movie is eye-rolling. The first is probably the annoying TV host. He's set up to be funny but he's annoyingly wrong. Many parts of this movie is like that and comedic moments don't turn out to be funny.

I saw this movie available on Netflix and was interested in the premise. You have Eddie Murphy who plays a private detective that specializes in finding missing children. He is told he is the "chosen one" and must protect the "Golden Child" who was kidnapped by an evil sorcerer. I didn't know exactly what to expect. Eddie Murphy is known for doing a lot of action or comedy movies. This movie ends up being a mix of action, comedy and fantasy. Some people will mention this movie was a low point in his career. Well this movie earned close to 80 million dollars. Eddie Murphy has done some more recent movies that have done far worse. There are a lot of funny parts in this movie. I really enjoyed this movie. This was a fun movie to watch.
