Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Erica Derrick By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Candida It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
Caryl It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
classicsoncall Fans of Gothic styled revenge dramas will appreciate "The Crow", a film achieving something like cult status with the tragic death of it's principal star during filming. Brandon Lee is appropriately cast as the enigmatic Eric Draven, returned from the dead to avenge the murder of his girlfriend as well as his own at the hands of thugs operating under the auspices of a crime lord who keeps an entire neighborhood under his sway. Lee is charismatic in the role, ghostly white face paint notwithstanding, which lends an aura of awe and fascination to his character. Unlike his famous father Bruce Lee, Brandon doesn't indulge in choreographed martial arts to seek his revenge, though he does achieve a level of creativity in the way he dispatches his victims, leaving a unique crow style calling card each time he exacts his retribution. The picture itself is dark and foreboding in keeping with it's theme, with the villains having such descriptive names as Tin Tin, Funboy, T-Bird and Skank. Interestingly, Eric Draven himself is never referred to as The Crow of the title, as that function is performed by a mysterious black bird that heralds Draven's appearances and serves as witness to the retribution that follows.
armands_briedis I think one my favourite movies of all time will always be The Crow. I was 10 the first time I saw it and I still watch it sometimes. It's one of the most visually stunning movies I have ever seen and they pulled it off more than 20 years ago without all the CGI technology we have today. It's a work of art in every frame. Story wise it's full of pain and loss, and the movie captures it so well that it always puzzles me how they could make such a dark and depressing story so beautiful and exciting at the same time. And then there's Brandon Lee - the actor of the main character who got accidentally killed on the set by a malfunctioning firearm. This fact alone makes the movie even more interesting as the movie itself questions the nature of death. This movie influenced me in such a way that I started to appreciate the beauty of all dark and scary things we experience. Most people usually look away when experiencing something negative, but I am always driven to understand it and appreciate it if nothing can be done about it. It's very interesting how art can change our personalities and the things we like. The Crow is the suppressed rage of poets and artists everywhere burning their oppressors on a dark wind-swept night and it's one of those movies that got many people interested in the goth culture and elevated it into a whole new level of popularity. At its heart it is a simple revenge movie; a soul drawn back to a corrupt living world to punish those that killed him and his fiance, but the way it's portrayed sets it apart from similar movies. It's a dark journey in a post-industrial hell-scape in search of those who wronged him. If you're looking for something dark and beautiful, this is it.
Cinema Oddity Spoiler-free The word "marvelous" is best used for a movie like this. The reason this movie is so notorious for it's themes will be addressed last. One of the most striking visual styles is in this movie. It was originally supposed to be black and white. While the idea was scrapped, the movie gives off a monotone feeling of sleep and solitary, the movie is possessed by a look of darkness and gloom. The writing is sharp, funny, yet it makes you think. The violence in the script is handled maturely and with a rock n' roll style. The CGI isn't perfect but it holds up for a movie like this. The one flaw is certain dialogue can be stale, but it doesn't really affect the whole story. Side note: Listen to the Cure's "Burn", it is equally haunting and is the official song for the movie And then there is Brandon Lee. His acting makes me feel like he really is dealing with a tortured soul. This movie became infamous following his accidental on-set shooting. The death gave the scenes a melancholy feeling and as if this were made to capture his real life. This film is a tribute and memory of a haunting performance from a genuinely great film 1994 gave us Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption, and Leon: The Professional, yet the most overlooked is this Gothic masterpiece
Benedito Dias Rodrigues I'm a big fan from Proyas's work mainly because Dark City that to me is a real gem and my favorite but for first time l watch The Crow and it's fantastic visual of darkness...Brandon Lee was great in the role of dark avenger...and every men who killed you and violated your fiancée gets a proper revenge, every character is mad and evil who give us a sensation of the vengeance is normal and applicable....another good action is Ernie Hudson who proves as a good actor....score for good soundtrack, great picture really but sadly the DVD haven't no extras unfortunately!!
